    AK/Arctic Circle or bust!

Been planning a run through Yukon, AK and to the Arctic Circle for about a year and a half.

FINALLY - Leaving on Sunday for an agressive 23 day ride with mostly bike camping. I am soooo loooking forward to it. Hope to be back home on 4 July.

Pic of the bike with all gear I am taking. (Pic from the Memorial Day Utah Shakeout Ride.)

Traveling very light. That is the whole point. Cause really: tent sleeping bag, tools, various sundries and two changes of clothes - what more do you need??? It is only 23ish days.

Lucky I am traveling with a buddy so we can split some of the gear. I have tools, he has first aid kit, split some cooking gear and food. NO - we are not sharing tents....the first rule of two man tents is that they are not. Two man tent is one man plus gear!

Route up is simply the ALCAN to Fairbanks. Plan to be in Fairbanks for a down day to party for Summere Solstice. And also do some maintenance like oil change and get rid of the street tires. Then up to Prudhoe and a quick jump into the Arctic Ocean. From there we are winging it. We want to play in southern AK on the dirt. Likely take the day.5 ferry to Prince Rupert and come back a more southern route.

The 800GS is a good bike. I am enjoying mine.

Do not put off living the life you dream of. Next year may never come. If we are always waiting for something to change...
Retirement, the kids to leave home, the weather or the economy, that's not living. That's waiting!
Waiting will only leaves us with unrealized dreams and empty wishes.

Have a safe trip John and be safe. Take Pictures. You won't be disappointed. Canada is beautiful, but once you get cross there and into Alaska it is amazing.

Will do sir. i'll print this out and leave it on there chest. Speaking of shooting stuff. Are you planning on bringing a gun for the wilderness up there "just in case"? Someone told me you are only allowed to carry a shotgun in canada. Correct me if i'm wrong.

PS. If you need someone to babysit the triumph ... just sayin

Standard carry in AK is an Alaska Special its a 454 stub nose in a chest holster. They do NOT recommend anything smaller for the bears and moose.

Just saying I spend most of the year in AK.

However I am very very jealous!!! Have fun and be safe!!!

    Travis - PM coming.

As for carrying - Canada has very strict gun laws. Wpns are classified as unrestricted (hunting long guns typically), restricted (handguns) and prohibited (assault type wpns, auto, etc). It is not worth the effort to try to take a handgun through Canada. I could try to sneak one but if caught I dont see the gun again and probably have some legal issues. Plus I dont have a "drop gun".

I am not concerned with crime to be packing. Animals not really concerned with either. 1) While traumatic, I dont feel animal attacks are a common enough threat or risk and 2) If there is an attack likely - I am faster runner and rider than my buddy so it is really more of his problem.

If I get to AK and find something suitable I may buy and ship FFL back. But not likely.

If you haven't already, pick up a copy of The Milepost 2011/Alaska Travel Planner. Way worth the $30.....$20 plus ship on Amazon.

Have a great and safe trip. As mentioned, be careful with ANYTHING construed as a weapon in Kanada. I remember being told pepper spray was considered a weapon! Honestly, I'd check into that before even bringing a knife across. This was Ontario, so it may have been different there, but better safe than imprisoned.....

    Best of luck!

Picked up the Milepost in December - thanks for the offer though.

Pepper Spray is considered a weapon.

The beauty of this trip is that I will not have internet or my work blackberry! Falling off the grid sort of although I will have my personal cell phone. Also have a Spot II for tracking. I will have to figure the SpotAdventure page and post the link as an update to the first post. I used it to track my Utah run over Memorial Day with 10 minute track updates...pretty cool.

If you get all the way up to Point Barrow, make sure you dive in the arctic ocean and get the little Polar Bear Certificate for doing so. I got mine when I was a kid, we were there in June or July and the water temp was 34*

Good luck man, avoid the bears!
