Pikes Peak International Hill Climb photos (20)

I have seen interest in the hill climb in other sections of the forum and hope no one minds a few car photos scattered in with the bikes.

Here in Colorado we're fortunate enough to have the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb a few hours away from our back yard. It's a unique, international event that draws all kinds of different competitors. This was the last year of the road being about half unpaved, and half paved. They start paving the rest of the course shortly after the race. While most people are disappointed to see the course going to full asphalt, I'm sure it will open the door to many more competitors which can't be a bad thing. Everyone suspected the much coveted 10:00 barrier would fall as soon as the course was partially paved, it took years before the 10 min barrier would be broken. I look forward to seen more records fall for years to come.

Watching from Devils Playground (16 mile marker) above 12,000 feet high.

Devils Playground offers arguably the best view on the course as many lower sections can be seen from above looking down the hill.

A long zoom is always better....right?

Foreign hardware even makes the trip over the pond to take a lovely scenic drive up the hill.

Jeff Zwart picked this Porsche GT2RS up at Porsche headquarters and drove it over 1100 miles to the hill climb before racing to the top setting a new class record. Not shabby for a stock car.

Visibly faster than the competition in every way - this was the year for Tajima - breaking his own record and setting a new unlimited class record of 9:51.

    IMG_1801 by berg2639, on Flickr

Tajima was ecstatic for the record and donated all his winnings to Tsunami relief.

    IMG_1805 by berg2639, on Flickr

Overheating by the time he reached the top of the mountain, Tajima left nothing on the hill, except for water dumping out the overflow.

Millen suffered brake problems for the second year in a row. Sadly, it wasn't to be for him.

This Triumph Speed Tripple was the first bike up the hill and offered an incredible sound.

    IMG_1884 by berg2639, on Flickr

Chip Yates set new electric records on his 240hp electric superbike. At 14,000 feet, the electric superbike still makes 100% horsepower.

No other way to put it...this...takes...balls.

    IMG_1910 by berg2639, on Flickr

12,000 feet high and climbing while racing to the top - there's always time for a wheelie.

    Or a slide...

While Carlin Dunne was a rookie, he schooled the competition in a fashion worthy of any veteran hill climb racer. His Multistrada was a stock dealership demo bike that will return to demo form once it gets back to the dealer.

    IMG_2042 by berg2639, on Flickr

Not bad for a touring bike.

    IMG_2045 by berg2639, on Flickr

While the cars battle the clock alone, the bikes are released in groups to race handlebar to handle bar all the way up the hill. 9 miles in, they're still this close to each other.

    Thanks for viewing folks.

Awesome indeed! Great pics. It is amazing seeing the cars and motorcycles race after seeing them parked downtown Fri night. I was wondering how that Chip Yates bike would perform but it seems it does not lose hp in altitude?!

It's a great event to see at least once. I went when most of that was still gravel, IMO it's lost some of that dramatic hairy rally feel now that it's mostly paved.

AWESOME! Have you watched from Glen Cove? I watched from Devil's Playground last year, but always though Glen Cove would be sick for the experience of speed...

Also, anybody know of any sidecar racing in Colorado? I wanna be the monkey..

Considering it was his first time, and he was absolutely terrible on the dirt sections, he did great. He was in the top few on the asphalt sections, and the bottom few on the dirt sections. With next year being fully paved, he will be a serious contender for the win. And no the battery looses nothing at elevation in comparison to the power that an internal combustion engine looses at elevation.

I camped at Glen Cove. You can see the cars pass Glen Cove from Devil's Playground. I'm sure it would be a fun area to watch from though. The transition from dirt to asphalt right there is incredibly rough.

I have camped at Devil's Playground before but they no longer allow you to do so. Glen Cove is the highest elevation that you're allowed to camp at.

I have one of the 508 and two of the 521. I'm not real happy with the 508 shots though.

12 something mile course and only ~2.8 miles were dirt. also, jeff zwart did not set the 2wd time attack record, rod millen beat him by 3 seconds but he did beat his own record from last year and i guess you could say he has the fastest stock, production car, street legal, what have you record.

great pictures, have any cool ones of my shops a4 by chance? the silver/black one.

    Thanks for the corrections SAG.

I didn't realize Millen pipped Zwart for the TA2 class. I know Zwart went before Millen so maybe I heard them say something about his time and then neglected to hear them say Millen beat him shortly after.

I have a few photos of the SCR car. Do you work at SCR or take your car there?

Re: Pikes Peak International Hill Climb photos (20)

its funny that the gt2rs is getting all this attention for being stock and coming so close to the "700hp" genesis but i want to know how stock it really was.

at fridays qualifying practice he was running far far behind rod millen, he sat out a run while the porsche representative was plugged into the car on a laptop. ten minutes later he ran and shaved like 15 seconds off immediately lol. i have a hard time believing the porsche tech didnt pull some ecu trickery and reflash it for qualifying and race day. great competition though. hope those two guys come back next year. monster said at the awards banquet that he will be back next year in an all new car. cant wait.
