GoproHD $260ish, Gopro/nonHD $180ish, is HD worth it?

checkin out prices on gopro's has anyone bought the 1080 and went to the nonHD version or vise versa? I'm not sure i need the full HD, mainly for reasons that i wont be using it for any high speed racing or whatever, just bouncing around forest trails, burning down fire roads and whatnot.

Also, mounts... Is the helmet mount FTW, or are the bar mounts better/worse? It will mainly be on a big Thumper, my DR650, I know vibration might be an issue, but I have a lot of real estate there on the bars. I'd also assume they are a bit safer on the bike vs on my head, as i sometimes use my head to ricochet against low hanging tree branches...

Thoughts? Any good used ones around? Saw one on CL for $100, but id rather snag one from a forum member if its not gettin used.

FWIW the 1080p version should be attainable for closer to $225. I think I paid $215 back in March. The 960p version doesn't have the expansion connector, meaning you can't use the expansion LCD backpack or the expansion battery. Not sure if that matters to you.

I have only had the 1080p version and have absolutely no complaints. Yes 1080p is a bit of overkill in some situations but it's great having the ability to pop the SD card into a reader, pop it into my PS3, and watch my video in glorious 1080p. I would recommend spending a little more for the top model since it has the expansion port.

960 is sufficient for nearly all applications. I will be getting a 960 soon. Try to get a gopro sponsorship through hooked.com and you can get it for like 150.

    Hookit.com

I get the 960 for 140 shipped. Love the 960. 720p is more than enough for anyone.

I got mine at Riders Discount. I just called up TJ at 866.931.6644 ext 817 and mentioned the WERA board and he gave me a quote. They are good folks over there, give them a call and see what they are going for these days. I was wrong, it was $225 back in March, but still a good deal.

I'm looking at these too (all though I want 4 of them).

I read that the 960 is for surfing. 1080p is going to remain the standard for the foreseeable future, I would go with that.

I like that you can record at 30FPS in 1080 or 60FPS in 720. The reason being is in 720 you can slow down certain shots without a detectable loss of FPS (ie playing at half speed won't look choppy).

They might not be accepting right now. I have seen them open up sponsorship deals a couple times a year.

GoPro isn't for road racing. Maybe later...

    Applied for Bazzaz and Braking.

Just trying to think of the brands I use. Might do SuperSproxs. Pretty sure my twin is going to destroy the Al sprocket on the rear. Amsoil isn't a bad idea...

Re: GoproHD $260ish, Gopro/nonHD $180ish, is HD worth it?

I have the GoPro 960 and it's perfect for everything I've put it through so far (mountain biking, snowboarding, dirt bike, street bike, snow biking, snorkeling, zip line tours, etc.). The video quality of the 960 is amazing. As for mounts, I have a mount on my dirt helmet, but I can feel the drag if I'm cruising and I've had it get caught on branches when riding trails or snowboarding in the trees. I'm going to get the handle bar mount because that just seems like a more realistic perspective and it will keep the camera from getting in the way. I have a chest strap mount for it, which is great...but is only really a great angle for things like snowboarding or wakeboarding. With the chest strap, any activity with handle bars (which is most of what I do) the handle bars are always in the middle of the shot. So definitely get the handle bar mount if you can.

One huge benefit of getting the 1080 over the 960 is the added accessories you can get for it. They are making an lcd screen that you can attach to the 1080 so that you can view your video without having to connect to a computer. They also have the 3D kit, which will only work with the 1080.

It ultimately boils down to what you're using it for and what your personal preferences are.

Also remember, if you EVER think you want to do 3D movies.. you HAVE to have the 1080p cameras. The 960 will not be compatable.

Re: GoproHD $260ish, Gopro/nonHD $180ish, is HD worth it?

I got the 1080 from Fay Myers for $248 out the Door with the Helmet mounts, Suction cup, and several attatchy bits to move it at weird angles....but of course that was with the current Military/Police/Fireman employee discount until august 31, Gotta say i love the quality of the 1080 plus the ability to scale all the way down to basic WVGA quality if I wanted...Only problem is video editing....only like 3 programs I know of can edit MPEG4 video without causing it to become choppy and none of them are free... But biggest point I guess is that 720p is still HD quality and the difference between the WVGA and 720 settings is very noticable...not so big of a difference between the 720 and 1080 settings.

Edit: also for you guys talking about sponsorships you should check out promotive.com (especially if you are in the military or actually involved in a sport)
