My battery died, now my bike wont start.

Hey guys, ill start off by saying im brand new to this fourm. Im a sophmore at CU and have an 04 zx6-rr (yes the 600 not the 636). The bike has hardly over 10k on it and has run great since i bought it last spring. But about 3 weeks ago i accidently left my key on for a few hours and by the time i realized it my battery was shot. After going out and getting a brand new battery and putting it in the bike wouldnt start. Right before my dumb key move it started no problem, and i brought the battery back in and had it tested and it was at 12.9v so its not that batter.

I believe it may be the starter relay because it seems to be making a lot of clicking noises that i dont remember ever hearing, but before dropping 100 bucks on a new one i was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to what else it could be?

Assuming this is a regular battery, did you put the new battery on a trickle charger for the recommended time? If not, when they tested the batter was it just for voltage, or under load? Just leaving the battery on should not have caused any problems with the relay.

Check your battery connections. Also when you turn on the bike do the lights come on and do they look normal?

Im wondering if you have a bad ground?

Hello. I go to CU Boulder(?) as well and can come take a look at your bike and hopefully identify the problem so you don't have to throw money into the wind. Send me a text 303 551 5806.

what laster said to start with. The clicking your hearing may be starter celinoid (not a typeo I don't know how to spell it). They click when not getting enough "juice", I would check the amperage. Does the new bat. Have the same cca as the old. Also when people change baterys sometimes fuses get blown. These are easy things to check without spending more money.

but we should offer up, if you want to throw money at it be sure and invite CSC members to catch it. It's a win-win for everyone

Check your battery connections to make sure they're tight, and that not all corroded or severed. By the way you describe this it doesn't sound like a bad starter.

It is a regular battery, and yes i put it on a trickle charger for as long as they told me too (and the charger said that battery was fully charged around that time).

All of my lights and gauges also work fine, and ive checked all of the connections and fuses which all seem to be good. Thanks kind of why im at a loss as to what it could be becuase i didnt think just leaving my key on could ruin the relay.

When the battery place performed the battery test, was the test performed as a load test? Also try removing some of the other fuses with the exception of any main or ignition fuse and see if the behavior changes.

If the starter's not firing and just clicking, it's not getting enough juice. Like mentioned above, have 'em load test the battery. If the battery's still fine, check all of your fuses to make sure nothing's popped.

Other thing you could do, if still worried it's the battery is to jump start the bike from a car. MAKE SURE THE CAR IS OFF when you do this. You'll get some power from the car battery and if the starter still clicks, the it's not the battery and you cn start looking at the starter relay

Assuming nobody tried to hook the battery up backwards by mistake (and thereby blowing a fuse) have you checked your kill switch?

I am only reading the titles today and not the posts.

If your battery is dead, your bike will not Start. I'd start by getting a new battery or fixing the one you currently have. Then your bike may start.

leaving the ignition on like that has a tendency to burn up the points

    replace the points and condenser.

Welcome to the forum BTW and good luck.
