Oh yeah, Stumbleupon is a glorious timewaster! There are lots of random website generators like that out there, but they tried to combine a website generator with social networking.

So you let this website track all of your web surfing (and sell that info to third parties) in exchange for a few site recommendations?

That's like letting Zynga sell your marketing info as compensation for them letting you work on someone else's virtual farm.

Precisely why I block all applications on facebook, refuse to use bing, and use a combination of aliased/incognito browsing on google/chrome. I refuse to make it easy for them to make any $ off me at all.

    meh... to each their own...
    sorry for threadjack.

Youre good man... It a lot harder than you think to "hide" what you are looking at and where you get stuff from on the net, actually its nearly impossible.

I have written an email before and in the email I made reference to a GE refrigerator. Now it may have been coincidental but after that I started getting adds on other pages for GE products and I didnt do anything but type the email.

Fugget... They can see what im looking at and for, im not really that predictable and know where to go for what I need.

Not coincidence. Gmail (and others) will target you with ads based on the content of your emails. The only way to stop this is disallowing (and removing) all cookies from your machine. (sorry Ghost) or only allowing temp cookies that get deleted every time you close the browser. Checking your webmail only using your browser's incognito/inprivate mode is the easiest way to assure your email doesn't get cc'd to marketers.

So who hasn't had their virtual number tattooed to their forehead yet?

20 years ago people would have been burning down these companies in the name of the righteous screaming in the defeat of the Anti-Christ!

Now they freely post pictures to Facebook from the cell phones with encoded tracking information while actively reporting their coffee purchases with Foursquare.

We are better tracked with what we do to ourselves than any secret conspiratorial elite society could have ever conceived of. Time to give it up and just accept we live more and more online because we like it that way.

    reminds me of this:

Facebook "Is Truly A Dream Come True For The CIA"
Do not put off living the life you dream of. Next year may never come. If we are always waiting for something to change...
Retirement, the kids to leave home, the weather or the economy, that's not living. That's waiting!
Waiting will only leaves us with unrealized dreams and empty wishes.

Your email lives on their servers. They don't need cookies and that won't mean a damn thing, you still have to log in and they know what you wrote/received, so they can still target ads and profile you at will (and do).

    True.
I guess I was (mistakenly) referring more to the ability to correlate your web tracking cookies with your email.
