    Novice Starts! Practice,Practice,Practice!!!!PLEASE!

As I posted over on the MRA board.

Ok this will be my first & hoefully only rant on this subject.
Novice riders please practice your starts this is the second red flag start I have been involved in.
The first @ SCR when I almost was taken out by a launched bike right next to me then cart wheeling in front of me.
The next @ CDR N/O on the start where I was t-boned & my rear set was broken off & was unable to restart the race loosing any piont I should have got not to mantion my leg was crushed between the other riders bike & mine, luckely it was not broken.
The reason I feel the rider that hit me launched it from the start is because my tail section is cracked & I have a tire scuff mark on it.

Please your guys that don't know your bikes RPM range & what it could do if to high on a start from dead stop go out & practice your starts so you don't put others in danger.
I know this is racing but can't we try to take control of the issues that are controlable.

    PRACTICE,PRACTICE,PRACTICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not on the start of the race.

Damn Kevin I heard about and then later saw your rear set, didn't know, thats how it happened. I guess your luck with starts is going from bad to worse, either not enough launch to too much.

Ummm no Gene that means he has steaks. T-Bones are nice but I prefer filet mignon myself.

Oh and the starts don't get any better when you move to expert just by then you have figured out how to crash into each other and not fall over.

Technically speaking, a T-bone is when 2 vehicles are travelling (almost) perpendicular to each other, so if he got T-boned off the start, then somebody was seriously going in the wrong direction. It's more likely that he got hit from behind, or from a small angle (which is more likely).

I saw the tire scuff on his tail section and the broken rearset. It looks to me as though the person that hit him wheelied the start (not huge), couldn't control it, and crashed into him. But I didn't see the start, just the damage to Turtle's bike. The tire scuff is pretty high up there.

................ Gene & I bumped on (one of) the start(s) of MwSB. I remember thinking that it wasn't that bad, and then the old saying popped into my head: "Rubbing is Racing"

I agree. It's funny how your perspective changes after racing a few years. A little "bumping and grinding" going into a turn? Who cares, as long as nobody slams you. Passes that I would have considered too close or wreckless don't bother me now either. Imagine this, we are moving into race 5 and nobody on the 4 Horsemen team has crashed yet!!! I think last year we were averaging about 2 crashes per weekend.

OK it was more of a side swipe, Gene I got a great start @ 4r but evryone decided the closer you are to T1 the better off you are (on the start) so the door was slammed in front of me so I had to back off as soon as I did some dude rails me.

No this isn't a "Bad day @ CDR" type of post I am just asking if you aren't sure about your starts than practice before you get to the grid.

I have been talking about my lack of crashes since Pueblo, so it must not be working. No, he just pitted with us. :P

It may have felt that way, but I just went back and reviewed the stats - it's more like 1 crash every 1.5 race weekends:
Race 1 (Pueblo): 1 (Hoopty AmO)
Race 2 (PPIR): 1 (Hoopty in Sunday morning practice - missed the rest of the day)
    Race 3 (SCR): 0
Race 4 (La Junta): 2 or 3 (Bob NGTU - Hoopty NGTO + possibly AmO )
Race 5 (SCR): 1 (Bob NGTU) - Mike & I both crashed Friday during R2SL, but that doesn't count, IMHO (wasn't an MRA event)
Race 6 (SCR): 2 (Bob NGTO - Mike NGTO)
Race 7 (Pueblo): 1 Hoopty (AmO)
    Race 8 (SCR): 0
    Race 9 (Pueblo): 0
Race 10 (SCR): 1 (Bob NGTO)

Mike crashed in practice at PPIR too (broke his fender, remember?), and I crashed in practice at Race 3 SCR with cold tires too. Just one crash for me at La Junta, BTW.

Mike crashed on Friday at PPIR - I wasn't counting that.

Were they cold or overinflated? I forgot about that one. If you only crashed once at LJ, then 1 crash every 1.5 race weekends is still pretty accurate.

Turtle, from what I saw of the novices so far this year is that people are over reacting quite a bit to things in front of them. I remember in practice going in 4 in a row into 5. The first guy checked up and in unison everyone behind him did as well to an even greater degree.

One tip someone gave me is that if you have to check up don't do it all at once. Let off a little bit or stand the bike up a tiny bit, and then evaluate if you're still closing on the guy in front. If so then do it a little more. I'm not saying it was your fault, but it's just a general recomendation that was given to me that apply in this situation.

I rarely think of motorcycles without a little yearning. They are about moving, and humans, I think, yearn to move – it’s in our cells, in our desires. We quiet our babies with cyclic movement, and we quiet ourselves by going.
