Epic Spring Trip of the SW!

    "Who's coming with me?"

This March I get out of the military and before I start a new job there are two things I must do.

    1.) Go to Rio......Check, April 4-15
    2.) Epic ride thru southwest.

There are two time frames I am able to go, the second half of March or after April 20th (maybe the 21st, the 20th is not a good day to be riding.). With May 10 being my no later than date.

The trip is about 3,800 miles in total and will take about 2 weeks. I plan on doing it as cheaply as possible......camping, Top Roman....you know the drill. However, if you prefer to class it up I can afford hotels too.

I would budget about $100 a day plus a set of new tries to be on the safe side.

Depending on when we leave will determine which mountain pass are accessible. The plan is to start south and once in NM cut west to the Grand Canyon. From there to Sequoia NP, North to Yosemite. West to San Fran then south on Hwy 1 for a bit until we cut west to Death Valley passed area 51 and thru Zion on the way to Page Az. Antelope canyon to Monument valley. Then if it is still early spring we keep south to 25 or if it is late May maybe head north to catch 70.

Any are welcome however a group of no bigger than 4 is the right size. Otherwise, it gets to crazy.

I know none of you know me yet but, baring the Zombie Apocalypse I will make this ride. You can count on that!

I like your spunk. Lots of great things out there to see in the great SW.
Watch yourself and the weather around the higher elevations. I love to long distance travel, kinda have the Mexico bug the last few years. I really don't see me having the time to tag along, so have fun.

Nor is he or his associates responsible for any citations as a result of you hanging with SoCo. Any attempt to coerce, blame, question, or pin your loser-riffic behavior on any of us, or those who are considered us for the night, as well as people we like, to include Salma Hayek and Nicky Hayden, among others, will result in a profanity stricken series of post that mock and taunt you incessantly, as well as many of us adding such insults to our signature lines. Avoid taking SoCo before bedtime. Do not use if you experience faintness, dizziness, inverness, difficulty urinating or blotchy skin. If I steal a line, quote, avatar or image from a post you make on the internet, you're not getting credit.*

Yeah, I might have to go all the way down to Albuquerque to avoid snow.

If time off allows I'm hoping to do a similar trip.

For the Colorado section west to Grand Junction I would suggest going to Buena Vista and taking Hwy 50 out to Montrose instead of I-70. Should be about the same overall distance but Hwy 50 is a much more fun road.

Going one step further I would then (at Montrose) take Hwy 550 south before branching off at Ridgeway to Cortez and the 4 corners. Then head west.

Thx for the ideas nothing is set in stone yet I think by the end of this trip I might be a little fried and therefore take 70....if not your route would the correct choice.

Looks like a fun trip. If I didnt already have another long trip planned for this year I would give this some thought.

Here is a ride report that I did last year on my 6,600 miler. It might give you some ideas on packing or planning. Enjoy.

Does anyone have any ideas on "must see places". Plus, is route 66 worth riding?
