DELETED...guess it was illegal
EDIT: I was curious. Looks like there is one exception and that is a .22 caliber rimfire magnum cartridge. All others show illegal http://www.mainelegislature.org/legi...2sec11454.html

Bulldog's Motto: F*ck around and I'm going to bite you!!!
Unless you are starving somewhere, why in the hell would you hunt a deer with a .22?? Squirrels, rabbits, raccoons, armadillo, opossum, alligators, nutria rats, sure done all that...., but deer???

Some states do allow .22 caliber. Nebraska in particular does.

Sorry Wade, you always seemed like a nice guy. I'm sure you weren't aware of the regs. Guess PM would've been more appropriate. Congrats to your son regardless!
And it's state regs, nothing smaller than .240 for big game.
What's the reasoning behind it? Just curious, is it to prevent people from hunting without people hearing it?
Mostly the size of the bullet. Yes people that dont want to get caught hunting use smaller caliber guns so they are not heard but killing a larger animal (humanely) is harder and harder the smaller the bullet. A good shot can kill anything but the "kill zone" gets smaller with smaller rounds.
.22 tend to deflect and ricochet as well causing a lot of internal bleeding and possible suffering.
FWIW Colorado states it must be a centerfire cartridge of no less than .24 caliber.
Wade, congrats to your son though from what I'm gathering!
This was not a CO hunt, it was in NE, where .22 cal is legal.
Congrats to Blake for his first deer, that's a big deal!
Legal or not, I find it odd that even a young child would use a .22 for a deer. My first gun was 4-10 with slugs. Granted, we hunted in the swamp and rifles weren't as affective as shotguns in such thick brush. Oh well... I guess he can shoot! Congrats on his first kill, that's a pretty sweet day for a kid

I am fully aware of the regs. We were in NE, not CO. The rifle was a .22 Mag, not a regular .22. Pics were removed as it seemed the drama was already starting like normal on the CSC.
Blake is only 8 and is already an excellent shooter. This deer was dead before it hit the ground. He put the bullet in the neck exactly where I told him to. Hunting has been part of my family for generations and will continue to be.
i use to hunt when i was growing with my dad...ever since i left i have not. both my dad and brother are professional guides. they hunt the does for meat. to thin out, as well. but for almost 15 yrs now they only use bows.
the pics were awesome. imagine his delight when bags his first buck.
I think this is GREAT. Give my congratulations to Blake for a job VERY well done.

"If not us, who? If not now, when?"
i almost kill'd a few with my bike..
I popped one... with my car! While going just about as fast a bullet
Sorry Grim
Just curious, why would you use a .22? I'm not a hunter so I don't know but it seems like that would significantly increase the odds that the animal suffers...?
Don't you have to shoot it in just the right spot?
