    Which Oil?

I figured there would be a sticky on this, but not one. Couldn't find much when searching, so if there is a thread already (I'd think there would be) please link it for me.

Which brand, sythnetic, which weight, automotive or mototcycle?

Would be going into a 2004 Honda 600RR.

Anyone know if 15w50 Mobile1 synthetic use to have a "RED" cap? I could have sworn that was the one I used, but wondering if red cap went to gold cap now????

Historically, it's always been a gold cap.

the entire mobil oil line up has been repackaged ... near as i can tell ...

Mobil-1 (red cap) ..... is now ..... Mobile-1 (gold cap)

    =====

    CAUTION
i think i may have a clue as to what happened with that report of mobil red cap doing a number on the clutch

    note i didn't say mobil-ONE ....
the NEW packaging has the red cap on somthing different now (see pic on left)
the OLD mobil-ONE recap is on right for comparision (it is NOW gold cap)

anyhoo ... the new redcapp 50000 thing is cheaper and as i was in a rush and had limited funds in my pocket i just grabbed a couple bottles of the 10w40 (after checking the bottom of the api circle was clear)

i guess this is one of those exceptions that prove the rule
because my clutch started acting up the next day while riding

being mindful of that one bad report from earlier - i immediately went and got a couple green bottles of quaker state 10w40 and did another oil change

that seems to have cleared the problem up

    so WARNING

mobil-ONE red cap is the old version of the 'good stuff'
it has NOW been repackaged as mobil-ONE gold cap

there is a NEW red cap on the market and it is apparently 'bad stuff' for clutches

I use Mobil 4T 10-40 in both my bikes. 7000 or so between changes. They seem to like it. Lots of people use Rotella in different weights... A million+1 choices it seems.

    So is this it?

Because I also see they have another one in a "gold cap", but this is "extended performance"

any oil is fine but dude stay away from car oil people will say its ok IT'S NOT! not in newer bike it could get you buy but why be a cheap SOB, just use mobil 4t or repsol, i tend to run repsol even in my Italians and have gotten a good life on all even and 89 gsxr 1000 with 98K no major rebuild

its so stupid when people try using car oil we "company" have done break down testing on oils you would be blown away by the time and effort put in to different oils. i would never put normal car oil in a bike over 1995 well like i said unless your a cheap sob

for the 600 rr stick with 15-40

I'll go oil shopping with you sometime soon, Nate. That gold-cap stuff you posted above looks like it might be it, but if there's been a re-package of the product, gotta make sure and look at the fine print!

    Re: Which Oil?

I use Mobil 1 15-50 auto. But I have a dry clutch, I wouldn't recommend for a wet clutch. I've seen extensive research proving this to be ok for my bike so I'm good with it.

Too bad Devaclis is not on the site anymore, because I am pretty sure he used this automotive Mobile 1 15-50 for the entire life on my 600RR (previous owner); it has 30K+ miles on it too and never had any clutch slipping. I remember him swaering on the "red" cap, but think it changed now to "gold" cap. DANA WHERE ARE YOU!!!!

    Re: Which Oil?

    Nate-

It may have been me that turned Dana on to Mobil 1 15W50 car oil.

The stuff used to come with a red cap and it was really really good in motorcycles. I've used it for years in both street and race bikes and been very pleased with the performance. At teardown time for the race motors they typically show exactly the kind of wear we expect in race motors when we get them rebuilt.

I had it posted on here years ago (think it got lost in the server crash) some real lab testing pitting a bunch of the motorcycle "specialty" oils against it for the types of abuse that motorcycles put out and the Mobil 1 car oil was as good or better than any of the motorcycle specific oils at that time.

There are two versions - the Mobil 1 15w50 (used to be red cap) and the 15w50 EXTENDED PERFORMANCE. I've used both in motorcycles without problems.

That being said - recently all of the Mobil 1 car oils were reformulated. I've not done any looking in to what they did to them, but it's possible they removed the stuff that make them good for motorcycles like zinc and phosphorous. If they did, the oils will still work in motorcycles (and not make the clutch slip) but will not offer the protection that they once did for bikes.

Lately I've been using Redline Oils for my bikes. I've picked them because they are a high performance oil maker that's based here in the US and they make really really nice oil using the best base stocks available. Beyond that they are big supporters of motorsports at an amateur level. The oil is a little more expensive (about $13 a quart), but has everything in it that is good for bikes. If you need a resource for it, let me know.

    Be well!

Thanks this helps a lot! Well now I am not so sure I will go with Mobile 1; I was only going to because Dana sweared on it and seeing my bike has got over 30K+ miles on it I figured I wouldn't want to change anything, but if Mobile 1 re-formulated then maybe it is no longer the same and not worth the risk. Uggh....I hate change!

    Maybe this will help?

    http://www.mobiloil.com/usa-english/..._Products.aspx

Question: What's the Zinc Level Mobil 1 15W-50?Hello, I read your answer about ZDDP and phosphorus levels. You even list the phosphorus level in your table, but you show no listing for the level of zinc. Other oil companies also list their zinc level. I would like to know the zinc content in your 15W-50 oil. I would like the level for the gold cap and the silver cap separately. I drive a car that is over 20 years old and the answer is important to me. Thank you, Jerry-- Jerry Baer, Hollywood, FL

Answer: The important element here is the phosphorus since it is the active antiwear additive. That's why we show phosphorus as well as zinc. The zinc content is in the range of 0.12 - 0.13 weight percent (1200 - 1300 ppm). (Mobil 1 Extended Performance 15W-50 [gold cap] was discontinued about May 2009.)

+1 on the 4t, its decent priced and i go around 5000-7000 miles between changes, oil still looks pretty good when changed. but its just like asking which bike you should get, the possiblities are endless.

I've been looking at this stuff. Seems like it only comes in one weight 10W-40 right? I assume that is the weight you use?

    Shell Rotella T.

    1. Because I am cheap
    2. Because I beat to hell my motorcycles and the engines are all top notch.
