    Now Corporations can conduct raids...

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/26/te...ine-crime.html

SEATTLE — Microsoft employees, accompanied by United States marshals, raided two nondescript office buildings in Pennsylvania and Illinois on Friday, aiming to disrupt one of the most pernicious forms of online crime today — botnets, or groups of computers that help harvest bank account passwords and other personal information from millions of other computers.

With a warrant in hand from a federal judge authorizing the sweep, the Microsoft lawyers and technical personnel gathered evidence and deactivated Web servers ostensibly used by criminals in a scheme to infect computers and steal personal data. At the same time, Microsoft seized control of hundreds of Web addresses that it says were used as part of the same scheme.

The sweep was part of a civil suit brought by Microsoft in its increasingly aggressive campaign to take the lead in combating such crimes, rather than waiting for law enforcement agencies to act. The company’s targets were equipment used to control the botnets, which criminals, known as bot-herders, use for ill intent.

Microsoft has a big interest in making the Internet a safer place. Despite inroads made by Apple and others in some parts of the technology business, Microsoft’s Windows operating system still runs the vast majority of the computers connected to the Internet. The prevalence of its software has made Windows the most appealing target for online criminals, and the security holes they discover in the software are a persistent nuisance for Windows users.
Granted, this was against Bots, but I wonder when the RIAA will be empowered to raid your house looking for your illegal copy of Miley Cyrus' latest...

I found this interesting coming out of the Occupy Wall Street Movement.

Occupy the Internet: Protests Give Rise to DIY Data Networks

That, in short, is what Wilder’s Free Network Foundation is trying to get around. In the fall, he was the man behind providing Occupy Wall Street protesters with Internet access. His Freedom Towers — consisting of a modem, router and radio — let protesters in Los Angeles, Austin and New York communicate with each other without fear of government surveillance.

Regardless of what you think of Occupy Wall Street‘s politics, the reality is that the question of who controls the Internet is only going to become more pressing as it takes an increasingly central role in our lives.

Seems as price comes down and capably of technology rises, there will always be ways around governments or corporations attempt to control all that is seen or heard.

The Pirate Bay is headed to space

By George Wong on 03/20/2012 08:36 PDT

The Pirate Bay is one of the largest and most popular bittorrent trackers still around today, and it has no plans to retire anytime soon. Despite news of other large torrent trackers shutting down, The Pirate Bay has no intentions to follow suit. The tracker recently converted its links from torrents to magnet links, and now it wants to make its servers untouchable by the authorities: by sending them into space.

The Pirate Bay recently outlined in a blogpost that it intends to put servers into low space orbit using radio-controlled drones to avoid being raided by ground-based police – “This way our machines will have to be shut down with aeroplanes in order to shut down the system. A real act of war”. While they haven’t figured out how they’re going to do it yet, they’re aiming to build a proxy system first. No idea what kind of permissions they’ll need to pull it off – but it’s unlikely that they would listen anyway.
