Ive read up on it alot, my entire house is covered in it and the plan is to remove it.
Who here has done it? What are your suggestions and preferred methods?
I know red flags come up with asbestos and I have had mine tested which is asbestos free.

Is it a lot? Has it been painted?

I've done it in a house before. There is no way around it being messy. Get the biggest putty knife you can find and scrape away. I covered my whole floor in plastic sheeting before starting and just folded it up and threw it away when I was done.
Good on you for checking for asbestos...most people miss that step.
Here is a good video I just found.
If yours has been painted let me know and I know how to do that too

I did this several times.
Tools:
Plastic sheeting
12" putty knife
2" or 6" putty knife
1-gallon sprayer
1) Cover the floor with plastic to throw away. You're going to make a big friggen mess.
2) Get a 1-gallon poison sprayer at HD and just fill it with water.
3) Get the ceiling good and wet and let it soak for a couple of minutes (for a standard room I would spray the whole thing once to let it soak and then concentrate on 5' sections)
4) Use the large putty knife to scrape big sections at a time. I hold a bucket in the opposite hand to catch what's dropping off.
5) use the smaller one for edges and other areas you can't get with the big putty knife
If you get the right amount of water on it, it falls right off. Just add a bit more water if it's not.
Pretty easy task, just friggen messy! Good luck.

Be polite. Be professional. But be prepared to kill everyone you meet.

Fucking everywhere man the only place it isnt is the bathrooms.
I do not believe its painted over as I can touch it and it comes right off so nothing is sealing it in.
Sucks dude... Its not that hard just time consuming.
Take a look at the video I linked when you get a minute. Seeing someone do it makes it easy to understand. Even though its hard to mentally do, drag the hose inside and spray that shit!
Some people use a 10:1 water:vinegar ratio. As bad as it sounds the smell of vinegar is better than the smell of some ceilings. Up to you.
As long as your house was built after 72 you wont have any asbestos issues but I would still wear masks.
Edit: If you add vinegar (and it does help break down the "popcorn") you have to use a spray bottle.

Why remove it? Is it just for looks for for a different reason?
Doesn't that stuff help for "noise reduction" in a room? Always thought that was why it was used; other than to hide ceiling defects.
Just so I contribute to the thread; here is another video. Guess if you are lucky you can use water and vineger and gravity will bring it all down with no scraping. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74rr71tZN8U

Bulldog's Motto: F*ck around and I'm going to bite you!!!
Homex 6100 texured cieling scraper. I think this is the one that holds a trash bad on it. Your still going to need plastic but this catches most of it and keeps it out of your face. You should probably get to sence ill probably be there to help.
A good long ride can clear your mind, restore your faith and use up a lot of fuel.
A good rider has balance, judgment, and good timing. So does a good lover.
I used one of those homex scrapers and they suck! I picked up a couple dry wallers stools from HD and used the above methods with water and a 12" knife. Its one hell of a work out!!!

add about 1oz per gallon of liquid laundry detergent it helps the water soak in faster.
