    Archery

Anyone here into bow hunting or archery? I'm looking to pick it up as a hobby. I did go to an indoor archery range in Denver recently and shot a non-compound bow. However, I'm looking to get the real-deal archery setup and all, but the bows all look like transformers or something. Anyone want to give some tips or ideas of what gear I should buy, where I should go to learn to shoot, etc.?

Look into PSE or Bear. Stear clear of Hoyt and Mathews.

I hear good things about this instructor.

I also understand his survival courses are top notch.

    Re: Archery

There's a shop down here called Bill Pelegrino's Archery Hut I'd recommend. I know Bill personally, and I've seen him take people who've never shot a bow in their life, and they'll be shooting sub 5 inch groups at 30 yards in 2 hours.
He's also a beyond-avid archery hunter, goes on an average of 6 or 7 archery hunts per year, and is a national champion archery competitor.

Don't buy the "horse" till you learn how to ride... if possible. That way you won't get suckered into buying what you didn't know you wouldn't like.

go to a pawn shop and buy anything from a major brand name that was made in the last 3 or 4 years. Will save you $$$. I picked up a bow last year that is freakin awesome for $100.

Or, you can spend $1000 for something brand new if you want.

Oh Yeah... Screw the sights & all the extra add-on junk. Learn to shoot 1st & the rest will follow.

Check out Bear's ready to hunt rigs. Economical and you get the whole setup. Bear's charge and strike packages are pretty good and won't break the bank. Diamond's bows are awesome but pricey. Main thing with a bow (if you plan on hunting with it) is practice practice practice. I get better everytime I shoot and with a bow with limited range you can always use good practice.

Like new hobby - you won't know what you like until you try it for a while. There is no "best" bow and there are a lot of different styles and accessories to suit different needs.

There are good shops all over the place. Many have league nights which would be a great time to stop in and observe the atmosphere and the different setups that folks use. Ft Collins has a nice outdoor range and we're coming up on outdoor 3D shoot season.

+1 on Fort Collins' range. There's also a shop in southern Fort Collins that has a nice indoor range.

The only extras I might recommend are an arm guard (definitely, you will get a mean bruise), and possibly a release because of the higher tensions of modern bows. It's still very do-able by finger, but 60 to 70 lbs on your fingers is no joke.

bought my bow there but have since had a good shop open up closer to my house so I don't go back. Haven't done enough business with them to rave one way or the other. They treated me well enough the one time I was there and I haven't heard anyone talk shit about them.
