Super stoked for this. Been re-watching the first season on BD...it's friggin' gorgeous! I'm close to half-way through the second book, so I'm on track to stay ahead of the show.
One of the best shows ever.

Haven't seen the list, but from what I know of the second book you've got Stannis (who wasn't seen in the first season at all), his wife, his spiritual guide (Red Priestess or somesuch), Theon Greyjoy's father (right prick that guy is...wonder where Theon got it from...lol)...yeah, the list goes on and on.
And the second season opener should be balls out awesome. I'll just say "blood and fire colored comet".

Where are yall watching it? I started the first season when I was traveling for work and caught most of it. THat prompted me to read the books. Now that I am not traveling, and I don't have HBO at home, I have missed out.
The closest thing to immortality on this earth is a Federal government program - RR
The series is so much better than the books...and that's rare.
Assuming Season 2 follows the basic outline of the book like Season 1 did, this should be good. The books grind to a halt and drown in a flood of too many characters after book 3, but that's a ways off for the series...

Season 2 opener was awesome. I was expecting something more visually striking from the red comet, but Robb's direwolf made up for it =).

That kid plays his role so good, I'm amazed he doesn't get beat when he appears in public.And yeah, didn't see that coming.
I've got more flavor than a packet of macaroni.
I'm enjoying the way this show is weaving some magic into the story. The bed-ridden boy having dreams, the way the show ended last night. Really cool stuff. Going to have to read the books.

The show is actually much better than the books. The time limit makes the episodes cleaner and faster. The books are ponderous and ramble through a lot of shit no one cares about--but that's what happens when a trilogy becomes 7 books...Originally Posted by birchyboy

Yeah, the ending last night was nutty, not expecting a demon spirit to be born from that red witch. Although it reminded me of the original (70's) Conan the Barbarian, and that witch that he "encounters" in the first half.
I'm loving the post-commentary by the directors. Seems like they threw that in to explain details to those of us who haven't read the books, and might be confused by the MANY families, and new characters.

I just assumed Renly would be first victim, since he isn't yielding to his older Brother's conquest, so far. Can't wait to see what that demon thing looks like.
So the Starks have the cool-ass wolf pets, Dani has her three dragons, Baratheon has the black smoky demon thing. The Lanisters don't have anything but an asshole brat king Joffrey that needs to have his nuts chopped off, oh and that big mercenary/guard "Dog". What else am I missing?...

The Lannisters "have" Tyrion, the Imp. He's one of the best written characters ever, and Peter Dinklage (plus direction) is doing an absolutely phenomenal job of portraying him. Sure he doesn't fall in the classification of "magic" as it were, but he's a sneaky, cunning little devil whom everyone underestimates...even when they THINK they're overestimating him.
In reference to the incorporation of magic, it is indeed cool to see the slow buildup of such things. I appreciate the way that Martin's writing as well as the show's doesn't just throw all that stuff at you in the beginning. Though I would like to see a slight bit more visuals of the foreboding comet.
And I second the notion of reading the books. I, for one, haven't found them to be rambling. Martin has built an at times suffocating amount of detail into this world. While the show is amazing, there's a lot of details that must be left out that actually enrich the overall experience quite a bit.
Personally, I think HBO should skip nearly all of the wholly unnecessary sex scenes and include more of the details from the books--seeing scenes played out on screen nearly verbatim from the book is pretty freakin' cool.
