Opinions about the best oil to use

I know there is probably a ka-zillion different opinions about which oil is best but just trying to get an idea of at least what the majority agree on as far as the best high performance oil to use.

I ended up with this because it got good reviews, was easy to get (OReilys), and affordable (About $10 a quart), and always used Mobile 1 previously on this bike (red cap, but formula changed). Bike runs great on it so far.

I got hooked on the cheap walmart tractor oil. Ran it for 2 seasons in a race bike, 13k miles on my old street bike, 6k miles on my DRZ, 1 race season of minimoto, and all those motors still run great. It hasn't failed me yet.

You are thinking of Pro 4, the pure synthetic. Super 4 (previously Comp 4) is 40.99 for 4L bottle.

Re: Opinions about the best oil to use

I think the easier question is...which brands and types don't work or have failed someone. Oil brands tend to be pretty personal and each bike has a preference and what works for one may or may not work for the others.

I use Royal Purple which is a full synthetic race bike oil. I can go 10K between oil changes although I usually change it around 8K. The first time I changed put Royal Purple in the SV, the engine actually changed pitch and ran better with less vibration. Spooph uses what ever non-synthetic is cheapest and changes his oil every 2K or so. He puts a lot of wear and tear on his motor and likes being able to analyze his oil for problems in his engine.

So guys, what oils don't work?

Husky, I have been using the Rotella T6 fully synthetic because it's cheap, but I'm about to make the switch. Brock Davidson from Brocks Performance recommends Alisyn 0wt oil with Petron Oil Additive. All the dyno testing I've seen on multiple bikes shows 5-10 RWHP gain, and Brock says it's 100% safe for every day street riding.

Check out the article here on his latest zx14R he tested and switched to this oil..

Pay attention to the "Viscosity Shear Stability"

"The oils that perform well are those that show little or no viscosity
change. Oils demonstrating a significant loss in viscosity would be subject to concern. The flatter the line on the charts, the greater the shear stability of the oil."

And then, later on, the Gear Wear Test.

For simplicity, I'll past the conclusion below, but I suggest you read the document and see how your favorite oil performed.

Fwiw, I used to run Golden Spectro in my old F4 until I read this.

    Conclusion

The intent of this document is to provide scientific data on the performance of motorcycle oils and information on their
intended applications. The document also attempts to dismiss several rumors or mistruths common to motorcycle oils. In
doing so, it will assist the reader in making an informed decision when selecting a motorcycle oil.

The tests conducted are intended to measure variables of lubrication critical to motorcycles, with some having much greater
value than others. Gear and general anti-wear protection, oxidation stability and rust protection are the most important, with
zinc content being among the least important. The results were not weighted based on importance. The value of each test
is to be determined by the reader.

The data presented serves as predictors of actual service; the better the score, the better the performance. AMSOIL MCF
    and MCV
demonstrated superior performance, particularly in the most important areas, and each ranked first overall in its
respective category. It should be noted that the performance of a given manufacturer’s oils was not always consistent
between viscosities. For example, Motul 300V Sport scored second within the SAE 40 group while Motul 300V Competition
scored ninth in the SAE 50 group.

The results suggest a relationship between the cost of an oil and its level of performance. Generally, higher priced oils tend
to perform better, although price alone is not a guarantee of performance. Motul 300V Competition was the most costly oil
tested, yet lower priced oils showed better performance. Price must be put into perspective. The cost of oil compared to the
cost of a motorcycle is minimal. The cost difference between the average price for motorcycle oils and the most expensive
oils is about $10 per oil change. If the performance of an oil can support an extended oil change interval, that cost is
reduced. The consumer must consider the performance and benefits offered by an oil and how those benefits affect their
motorcycle investment to determine the oil’s value.

Looks like the prodrive type 1 is the MC stuff. kind of confusing but I like the applications this oil is applied to and the tech specs are awesome. I might give the quacker a shot of this.

I did not go. Had a friend invite me, but heard it was pretty pricey and filled up fast. I was thinking about going this Saturday but got family stuff to do. When you headed back next?

Fwiw, Royal Purple came in 8 out of 12 and then 8 out of 16 in the oil test I posted above.

For me, that's not good enough performance to justify the $ when any of the Top 3 are about the same cost.
