So I just did my first oil change on the new to me 525. Several of these little guys were stuck to the magnetic drain plug and more came rolling out with oil. I cant think if anything internal that would have bearings that small. Any ideas?

Well there's your problem right there.
Does it have a slipper/auto clutch?
It looks like ramp-up bearings.
Hard to forcast over the internet.

I believe the SMR's do have a slipper.
As far as I know it's not a slipper from the factory. I have a hinson slipper sitting right here and from what I can see there aren't any tiny ball bearings in it.

After some more research it appears to be part of the "locking lever" Feck! There's 8 little bearings in there. Found 6 and some metal shavings.

Couple of places I can think of: Water pump bearings, camshaft bearings, left transmission mainshaft, shift drum. Pretty much all of the other engine bearings are rollers, not balls. If I had to bet based on the size of the balls, I'd guess shift drum.

This is too easy. Good luck with it man.
Locking lever=shift drum detent. Easy to access from the right side of the engine, and only about a $15 part. Now if you can just find the rest of 'em. Hopefully it didn't damage the shift drum.

It's the roller that rides on the detent cam on the shift drum, basically it makes sure the shift drum rotates into the correct position to make sure the transmission is IN a gear(or neutral). If you've been experiencing vague shifts, false neutrals, etc., this is probably the culprit.

HAHA, as soon as I read the title I knew what it was gonna be. Deff. locking lever.
Sorry about the bad luck. Hopefully everything else is ok.
