How often do you change oil?

The owner's manual for my FJR says to change oil every 3000 miles.

I just got the bike last summer and have changed the oil and filter at 100 miles, 600 miles, and 3000 miles. (I also change gear oil in the differential at every oil change.)

I currently have about 3600 miles on the bike, and the oil already looks very black. I am running Yamalube semi-synthetic.

Should I:
1. Go with the owner's manual recommendation?
2. Go ahead and change the oil?
3. Split the difference and change the oil when the odometer hits 5,000?
4. Quit worrying about it, and have a drink?

When in doubt, Change it, it's not like it would hurt. But folllow the recommended intervals then go have a

I would disregard color. Just do what the manual states if you're worried.

I ride an old ninja, My oil changes itself. I just can't park in peoples driveways without cardboard.

Same here, except the racebike gets an oil change after every race.

3000 very easy to keep track of, 5000 on the tranny of my Buell.
race bike is different story

3000-3,500 miles on mine depending on the distances driven (commute or canyon) and how hard I push the bike.

Every 600 miles here. My bike doesn't leave the garage unless it's going to be ridden hard. However If I go on a 2000 mile ride I don't change it until I get home .

7500, per my interval schedule in the manual. Probably do the SV around 5.

Thats just lazy, so easy to change it on the side of the road while the cop writes you a speeding ticket...

but i agree, if you ride hard change it more often, if you ride like you are 150, change is every 3k. 2k is really the most i would go, esp if its not taking food off your table i would change it more often.. if you plan on keeping the bike a while.
