    stupid exhaust question? 5/14/12

Why is it that just straight pipes you lose hp but win u use a full exhaust you gain hp I have short pipes and Im loseing hp but if I take thim off I gain 1 hp is this becouse of backpersure I guess im not understanding something why does a 4-2-1 make more Hp thin if you ran 2 2-1 why does one pipe make more hp thin two, two would be more air flow right.

Depends on the bike. You also have to tune the carb and intake to match the exhaust.

There really isn't a hard fast rule to my knowledge.

Header design is about more than gross airflow. Engines emit exhaust in pulses, rather than a constant flow. A well designed header takes advantage of the pulse timing and the low pressure behind them to "extract" pulses from the next cylinder to fire. The math behind this is a function of the primary tube length, tube diameter, individual cylinder displacement, peak torque rpm, and exhaust pulse velocity as a percentage of the speed of sound.
    Thanks, Jim
