    Question High altitude riding

I've been riding my CBR F2 for years but have never really taken it to really high altitudes. I'll be headed up to the Leadville area this weekend and am wondering what to expect from my bike if I decide to take it. Leadville has the highest airport in the US, the planes I typically fly are also carbureted and the one time I've flown in there it handled "freakishly" crappy so I'm a little nervous about taking the bike.
    Also, what about trail ridge?

What altitude is it jetted for? If it's jetted for 5 or 6K feet you'll be ok, but it won't run well by any means. If it's jetted for lower, you'd better look into rejetting it.

The only thing you will see on a bike is a loss of power. I have ridden there many times including on carbureted bikes with no issues.

    Re: High altitude riding

It was jetted for around 4,500 and has ran solid since I brought it to Denver. I've done a lot of riding around Morrison, Deckers, Lookout mtn etc and it didn't seem to run any different than usual but this will obviously be a little higher than my typical outings.

You will notice a difference in power but other than that i would not be too concerned, i have ridden to the top of pikes peak quite a few times and the only thing i notice is i have to down shift and give her a bit more gas on an incline than i would if i were on lookout mountain.

You will most likely run anywhere from mildly rich to pig rich. Therefore you might notice some black smoke, especially when you roll on the throttle. You will be down on a power a little bit, but I imagine on a bike not that a big a deal, or as noticeable as a car.

If I jet something for 7,000-8000ft would it run too lean in the city? The dirty bikes are set up that way. Would it burn valves in the long run?

If you're up there and you don't run the Minturn loop your bike will be pissed!

    Re: High altitude riding

Well then it sounds like I'll be riding to Leadville this weekend. I'm not familiar with the Minturn loop but I'll be riding double most likely so that may be something I won't be able to enjoy to the fullest.

That's not true, you just gotta teach your lady friend to lean with you.

Thanks Jmetz. How do you guys explain to the ladies how to lean with you, the "do what I do" approach seems to only work for me half the time

One of these days we can go on a 2 up ride and my wife can explain to your girl what she does, there are a few people on here who have seen us in action that can vouch my wife is a really good passenger she leans with me, looks into the turns and makes it much easier for me to keep a slightly fast pace.

    Re: High altitude riding

I tell passengers that when I tap on their leg or they see we are hitting some turns, to hold on more than usual, also to hug up on my back so when I lean, it forces them to do the same.

Key is to ride smoothly, it's not about speed, if they feel you jerking around the bike, they won't trust you. If you are smooth, then they will have much more trust in your riding and will be able to relax more, which in turn, makes you more comfortable.

I have taken women in the past on plenty of spirited rides, only time one got scared was at IMI when I took her around the track.

I like your thinking, you get to touch their legs and get a hug in return. You're a wise man.
