R1 Rider hits Deer at 90mph

Story and pics inside, including deer, ouch...

    http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=339129

    Hey Guys,

I hit a deer. I am glad I'm alive. I was going west when it just jumped in front of me. Didn't even get a chance to slow down, press the breaks or clutch. I didn't even know what happend. It was like BOOM and then I was sliding on asphalt. I have slided about 80 ft. Bike was just behind me pushing and hitting couple of times. I though I will die. I had 1000 thoughts per second whlie sliding and trying to push away from the bike. Somehow I made a flip on the ground and it put me back on my feet. Automatically I started running and couldn't follow up my legs.

I don't have any broken bones. My helmet is all scratched on the rear left side of the head. Alpinestars jacket did its job very well. When I hit the ground with my shoulder it was like jumping into my bed. No pain at all. My upper body is in perfect condition.

The bad thing is I had jeans and my knees have some road rush, my ass got a little scratched too. I didn't even go to hospital. I was really lucky. I had some accidents before but I have never had this kind of feeling. I thought I am really gonna die.
I made a video with pictures, I didn't have camera on the bike at that time.

That was the one thing riding/driving in the Texas Hill Country that was a bit spooky. Heading back to Austin from West Texas out visiting the inlaws you could run across about 40-50 deer hanging out by the road on the stretch from I-10 to Austin on 290. When we went back for our closing in May I saw about 25 or so the night we drove straight through from here. I haven't been much in the mountains at night yet but saw a few in the middle of afternoon the past couple of weekends.

I know s guy in Texas who pretty much split two in half like this guy did, one with a Triumph Daytona 955 and the other a Buell. It busted the headstock off on the Buell, of course it started losing its fluids in the frame. Hes goes by the name Deerslayer now down there. The R1 guy was pretty lucky not to be hurt more than he was.

Deer and cows are really the only animals that terrify me on the bike. Generally speaking, everything else is smart enough to not cross the road/get out of the way.

Re: R1 Rider hits Deer at 90mph

We did a weekend trip out of Kerrville about 7 years ago, in a fairly wet April so it wasn't like that area of Central Texas was still in drought conditions. Out of the 16 bikes on the trip (met there from all over the state) we had two deer strikes. One literally ran into the side of the RC51 into the front fender and fairing around 3:00 in the afternoon. The rider stayed upright and it broke some pieces of bodywork but no other damage to the bike. The other one was around dusk after dinner at Mac & Ernie's in Tarpley, I was riding sweep and we come around the corner and everyone is starting to pull off the sides of the road, I see a deer getting up out of the road and start to run away. He was on an FZ1 and this deer tried to leap him, he caught a rear hoof in the helmet busting his face shield. We taped my clear shield that I had in my tank bag to his helmet to get back to the hotel. I had a bit of trouble with the dark shield and the bugs, my close call came when one of those huge turkey buzzards took off right in front of me on the most technical part of 16 south of Kerrville. I could hear the air off his wings as I slowed down and ducked, my wife had no clue that we missed the buzzard by a couple of feet. Hitting one of those could do some damage as well.

I was sweeping for a ride on Deckers and a deer cleared the rider two bikes up from me. The entire group had no idea we passed a herd of deer. Unfortunately I still don't have a Gopro cause that would have been an awesome video. From what I've heard, if you have no choice but to hit the deer, you're supposed to tuck into the bike as much as possible and hope the bike pushes the deer up and over you. *shudder* no thanks. Glad he's mostly ok.

Deer run across the path of a predator to put some distance between them and said predator while the predator turns to chase them. Most deer perceive cars and motorcycles as predators and instinctually cross in front of them at a full run.

I had a buck cross in front of me in Golden Gate Canyon just yesterday. Fortunately, I saw him before he bolted and was able to slow down.

Cows, on the other hand, are just stupid and don't have enough sense to get out of the way.

I laughed at that too. It's like everyone stupidly assumes that LEO's (especially detectives) are never online, never on car/bike/racing forums, don't use Facebook, etc.

Very naive assumption. No need to be overly paranoid, but temper it with common sense.

(not to mention HLS, FBI, DEA, BATF, etc. Yes they are all very computer/internet literate, lol)

    Glad the guy is OK.

One foggy early morning a few years ago, I was going west on Highway 50 and "threaded the needle" - right through a herd of about 10 deer that were crossing the road.

How would you like to get roundhouse kicked with a motorcycle?
