    Re: VFR800 Won't Start

Unfortunately I am on the road and do not have a gen6 electrical schematic with me. The VFR side stand is a simple open/close switch and does not operate any relay. Also, unlike Suzuki, and unless something changed in gen 6 (unlikely), the clutch switch does not have to be activated to crank - when in neutral.

So, when in neutral to get the bike to crank, we only need neutral indicated, a properly functioning kill switch (already verified), a properly functioning start switch (not verified), and a properly functioning starter relay (not verified). And of course all associated wiring connections.

Oh, an of course a working starter.

Most common component failure would be starter relay on this bike. Even that is rare and battery or connections are most probable.

Jumper cable directly between the starter and the battery. That'll tell if your starter is good. I had a faulty starter on my Duc that was traced this way. Make sure it's not in gear!

Good suggestion. Great way to narrow this down.

Yeah kinda, I've gotta arc a spark until I can get over to get a new relay but she does start and ride. That's how dedicated to my bike night I am. I couldn't just roll up in a cage!

So... It's not the starter relay. Swapped a new one in and same result. Thought it was because I was able to jump the connections and she would start. All the fuses are good the wiring looks to be in good shape. Pushing the start button turns the lights off so that's works..

When I get home I will trace out that circuit and give a few suggestions. I am almost positive there are two circuits in the button, one to energize the starter and one to kill the headlight. I could still be your button but that is only one possibility.

yes that is correct. it's a 4 pole switch with 2 NC and 2NO contactors.

Bank angle sensor, engine stop relay, engine stop switch, starter switch, fuse C.

at the miminum, a 12v test light would be priceless right now.

    Re: VFR800 Won't Start

This is the starting system diagram. I'm not that great with electrical. So with this diagram:
    relay is good
    main fuse good
    battery good
    ignition switch good
I'm guessing that these fuses are in the fuse box and they are all good as well as any fuse I've come across
    engine start/stop good
    Starter switch ?
the rest of this stuff is all good

So how can I test the start button?

The stop switch and relay should be good as the stop switch kills the engine and run position will start.

    Where is fuse C?

Edit: nm all fuses in box are good.

fuse C in the main fuse box.

start switch wires you are concerned with appear to be yellow/red and black

    Re: VFR800 Won't Start

The fact he is getting fuel pump prime rules out most of those items. I am really leaning toward the starter button, very simple test, while pushing the button you should have 12v at the yellow/red wire at the starter relay

    Re: VFR800 Won't Start

The black is an internal connection between the kill switch and the start button, it also powers the engine stop relay and as it primes the kill switch is obviously good.

    Re: VFR800 Won't Start

If I jump the relay connections she starts and runs just fine. Paul I'll see if I can check those wires.

    Re: VFR800 Won't Start

I really think its the button. If it tests good (12v at the relay on the yellow/red wire) then the only other possibility is the diode. There are two diodes in the unit, one that lights up the light and one that connects the starter. It is possible for one to fail while the other still works but that is a real long shot.

I am heading home so I will be off line for a while
