Devil's Highway - Part II - the road back to hell - Sept 14-16 2012

    Hey guys,

So back in April a handful of us did The Devil's Highway (aka the Devil's Spine).

It's a 3 day epic trip consisting of around 1600 miles. The best time to do it is late spring and early fall to avoid the incredibly high summer tempetures in Arizona.

    Previous thread located here.

For day 1 we'll either ride to Gallup, NM (500 miles) or push on to Eagar, AZ (630 miles). Limiting factor being day light however the road between Gallup and Eager is non-mountainous.

    1100 corners in 94 miles!!

    Date September 14-16th 2012

Estimated cost is $300 for fuel, food and lodging.

If you're interested in going, please let me know as well as what dates work for you.

Thumbs up Re: Devil's Highway - Part II - the road back to hell

The sooner we can decide on a specific date the better, I've got low seniority in my garage so I have to put in ASAP.

The last weekend of September or first 2 weeks of October work for Christie. Works for me too.

Just waiting to hear back from a few others. Miles let me know if you have a date preference.

One thing I forgot to consider is in Sept/Oct we're going to have less day light then we do currently.

By October 6th sunrise is at 7am and sets at 6:40pm

Going to Gallup during the day light won't be a problem (500 miles) but Alpine will mean leaving before sunrise or getting there after sunset. I'd rather leave Colorado Springs in the early morning and get to Alpine by dusk.

Re: Devil's Highway - Part II - the road back to hell

I looked up hotels is Eagar, AZ -- Best Western has gotten great reviews and it's $74/night. It's 624 milesl from Colorado Springs to Eagar (basically Alpine).

    Tenatively thinking Oct 5-7 (Friday-Sunday).

Average temps should be in the mid to high 60s as a high in Alpine but 85-90 in Clifton, AZ (the south end). Alpine is higher elevation so be sure to bring some layers or better yet heated gear

The other alternative would be riding to Gallup again and staying there. For the second time around I wouldn't do the whole 240 mile loop but rather just ride from Alpine to Clifton directly and back - saves us an hour or so.

I just want to avoid riding at night if we can help it

This trip sounds great. It's a little far out to plan, but I can make it happen as of today.

Oct 5-7th is actually a really good weekend for me and I would like to lock it in on that weekend.

Updated first post with dates - Sept 14th-16th.

This gives us a window to push it further back if the weather turns shitty. The last possible date range would be Mid-October.

A trailer? I can't do 14-16th, a senior tech has that scheduled already. I can do the weekends after though.

Yes a trailer, we would ride the really fun parts and drive for the really flat parts.

I can only do September 19-22. My friend and I both have the time off and are planning to do the route then.

Sounds like something I'd be interested in, but the dates in October are no bueno and it really depends on what weekend in Sept.

I'm out. Saving for a house, want to buy ASAP and working weekends yields more money.

    Have fun!

I'm OK with September 19th, as long as Chrissie is too (bornwildnfree) since she's flying back home to do this.

I'm interested. What would be the plan? Depending on date and money I may be able to meet you guys an gals in route. I will have a better idea this weekend of my situation. I would need confirmed dates. Sept 15 is a no go for me. After that I think I can be flexible. Weekend preferred. I wouldn't make a meeting in Buena Vista. I live in Ouray.

Weekends work best for me. I just noticed that sept 19 is a Wednesday. What about that weekend? The 21st through 23rd.

I think Christie is out in either case.

I think that weekend would work. Let me get back to you this weekend. I will see what my schedule is and look at the finances. If later works better for others I can be flexible too. For now I will shoot for the 21-23.
Just reread post 4. If the last weekend works for more people lemme know. A little more notice is always better at work.

I got the 21 off. I am good to go as far as work for the 21-23 of sept. If that doesn't work for everyone I may be able to do it the beginning of Oct. some time, but the 21 is my only window in Sept. Will update after this weekend when I have an idea of moneys. It looks good tho.

So currently I'm figuring Sept 21st through the 23rd.

I'll be leaving from Colorado Springs. Northern folks can meet in Buena Vista or Salida.

I'd like to get a head count of who's in.

Yea, that's the week of Meeting of the Minds for ABATE. I'll be in North Carolina representing sportbikes to the MRF and ABATE.
