    Mount Rushmore and buffalo ride...

Took a run through Custer State Park and accidentally found my way to Mount Rushmore. They say buffalo are dangerous and you should keep a good distance away from them, so riding through a herd standing next to and on the road might not have been the best call. Wish I would have had the GoPro with me. The buffalo gave me some odd looks, pretty sure they were saying nice bike.

The herd I had to pass through.

    Looking back after passing through.

    My boy G Wub.

Last but not least, the lady I spent the day with.

Nice pics! Mt. Rushmore is very cool. Did you stay for the lighting ceremony? They do that every night.

I hope you missed all the leather and Harley crowd that was just there.

Re: Mount Rushmore and buffalo ride...

I didn't stay. There is so much wild life up here around dusk and dawn that riding is a very risky move. Where I am living for the next 16 months, I am only about an hour away from Mt Rushmore. I hear the lighting ceremony is a must see though.

As far as the leather and Harley crowd, I did the exact opposite of avoid them, I headed to their holy land last weekend and went to Sturgis. It was awesome. The Triumph got a lot of looks and positive remarks from the Harley crowd.

Would buffalo charge a bike? I keep wondering that.. even the Elk up in Estes could put a serious hurt on you.

I asked this question when I was up in Yellowstone last year.

According to one of the park rangers, buffalo do not have good eyesight. So, they are known to mistake bikers for other animals because they are about the same size. Then, become territorial or protective of the herd.

I didn't want to tempt fate, so I got around them as quickly as possible.
Do not put off living the life you dream of. Next year may never come. If we are always waiting for something to change...
Retirement, the kids to leave home, the weather or the economy, that's not living. That's waiting!
Waiting will only leaves us with unrealized dreams and empty wishes.

    Travis,

Check out the Crazy Horse Memorial, it is only 10-15 minutes south of Mount Rushmore. http://www.allblackhills.com/parks/c...e_monument.php

Just east of Mount Rushmore, you can find Needles Highway which has some great views of the Black Hills and some very cool granite tunnels that you pass through. Also, along the highway you will see Sylvan Lake, which you will recognize if you have seen National Treasure 2, the Nicalas Cage movie.

Same area, just east of Needles highway is Iron Mountain Rd. That is where I took the pic of my Speed Triple with Rushmore in the background. It has many other great views of Rushmore too.

The Wildlife Loop in Custer State Park, again same area as the above locations, is a great spot too. There you will see the buffalo herds, like in my pics. There are also Prong Horn, Elk, etc... Your kids will like the area where the Donkeys hang out looking for handouts. If you think your kids will like a Donkey walking up to your car and putting its head in the window, not next to the window, but Donkey head all the way in the car, its a must see... Take some carrots to really get attention. You can even get out and pet them, at least that is what I have seen people doing. There is a lot more to do and see in the park, but the above is the main attraction. http://gfp.sd.gov/state-parks/direct...r/default.aspx

I haven't visited the area, but the Badlands gets great reviews from everyone I know that has seen the area.

Angostura Reservoir just south of Hot Springs is a really nice area, with good sandy beaches if you just want to have a fun day at the lake instead of driving all over.

If your into fishing, there is plenty of that too. I even have a large private pond behind the house I am renting that is full of small/large mouth bass and Crappie. I am just north of Angostura Reservoir if you want to get your kids some guaranteed to catch something fishing in.

Thanks, I am loving the Triumph too. It is so much fun, it should almost be a controlled substance. Every ride leads to bad behavior, well at least more than usual.

If I had known this, I would have turned around : "Bison are among the most dangerous animals encountered by visitors to the various U.S. and Canadian national parks and will attack humans if provoked. They appear slow because of their lethargic movements but can easily outrun humans – bison have been observed running as fast as 40 miles per hour (64 km/h). Between 1980 and 1999, more than three times as many people in Yellowstone National Park were injured by bison than by bears. During this period, bison charged and injured 79 people, with injuries ranging from goring puncture wounds and broken bones to bruises and abrasions. Bears injured 24 people during the same time frame. Three people died from the injuries inflicted – one person by bison in 1983, and two people by bears in 1984 and 1986."

I will say that there is a good chance they will charge a bike. I only went through the herd because the road was clear, when I rounded the curve you see in the pictures, there were calves standing in the road. No buffalo gave me a second look until I startled the calves and the calves took off running. That was when I noticed a full buffalo on the side of the road take notice and keep an eye on me.

My boss passed through the same area the following day on his Harley, and the same thing happened to him, he startled some calves. Next thing he knew a bull was stomping the ground and snorting. He hit the gas and got the hell out of there.

Thanks for the write up...i will check out needles highway for sure and possibly the badlands...i'd been to both sites as a kid and can still remember how cool those were. The pond behind your house?...would we be required to get temp fishing lic. or is it private and we wouldn't have to worry. I think i'd be more interested in the fishing than the kids Depending on how much time we have, the Angostura Reservoir sounds really cool too.

Thanks again for taking the time to type all that out! It's a big help!

No license required. I live in a subdivision of houses on 4-5 acre lots surrounding a large private pond. The thing is, out of approx 20 lots, my place is the only house. The pond is 20 yards from the back door. My closest neighbor is a quarter mile away and to the west and north is nothing but corn. My roommate and I regularly shoot clays off our back patio, pretty much shoot anything but high powered rifles. Last night we sat outside drinking and watching shooting stars and satellites. Country living has its advantages.

I live about 5 miles southeast of Hot Springs off hwy 79 close to the north entrance to Angostura Reservoir.

Custer State Park is awesome as long as you beat the tourist traffic into the park. Before 10am on a Sunday the park is usually yours. You are right, there are tons of tight twisties, Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Rd are perfect examples.

If there was a good long Saturday ride, I could make the trip down. But Sundays are pretty much out for me since its a 5 hour trip up here from Denver, I wouldn't have time for a long ride and commute back to Hot Springs. I have already used or scheduled all my vacation days for the year.

Welcome anytime. The weather is perfect up here right now. Its pretty cool in the early AM, but the temps are perfect during the day, in the mid 80s. I have a 3 car garage with plenty of room to keep bikes safe at night.

My boss told me about a nice winding canyon road he found coming out of Sturgis that I am gonna check out this weekend. Might try to hit Devils Tower too.

I passed through Deadwood on my way back from Sturgis. Reminds me a lot of Black Hawk. A coworkers sister is part owner of the Deadwood Mountain Grand, so we plan to spend sometime up there. Gonna spend the nice weather we have left outdoors, once the cold hit we plan to make regular visits. How can you not take advantage of only having to pay the maid cost?
