    Can I have internet?

I don't own a TV at my house, and don't have internet (I'm at my parental's right now). My cell phone has the smallest data package you can get (Because I'm a cheap bastard). I want internet, but don't want to pay for it. I pick up 3-4 networks in my neighborhood (By the way, I thought "I before E except after C"?)

But of these 3-4 networks, all but one are protected, and the one that isn't I can't really pickup to the point that it's useful. I've decided to rectify this.

Insert Wifi biquad dish antenna, http://www.engadget.com/2005/11/15/h...-dish-antenna/

I'll update this thread as I work on this. My budget is under $100, but I may have to go above that slightly. The goal here is to greatly extend the range of networks I can pick up. I'm hoping to get the dish today from Craigslist.

So, just to get this thread off on the right track, are you justifying theft because your too cheap to buy your own internets?

    Re: Can I have internet?

It's not theft, at least, not in the legal sense. At my folk's house in Springs, we leave our network unsecured so that others can use it. I don't care who else does, unless they download so much shit that it no longer works for anyone else, at which point I'll kick em off or just secure it. If you leave your network insecure, you are allowing others to use it, thus making theft not applicable. And I've spoken to the neighbor whose internet I plan on using, and he doesn't care.

But looking at the results others have gotten, I'll have my choice of thousands of networks. As long as I get one which allows me access to CSC!

No, it is absolutely theft of services in the legal sense. Just because it's not locked up tighter than Ft Knox DOES NOT grant you any legal right to use it. If your neighbor says it's ok then fine, but just squatting on someone's WiFi and using the service they pay for without authorization is most definitely theft. It may be worth so little that police won't pursue it, but that doesn't make it legal or appropriate.

So you are trying to find out how you can get something that someone else pays for for free without their knowledge. Yeah that doesnt sound like theft at all.......

or when sounding as "a" as in neighbor or weigh.

On the other topic - yep, theft unless (as you state you do) you have the permission of the person paying for the service. I'll bet the cable company would be bitched off to find neighbors sharing wireless internet too.

    Re: Can I have internet?

After thinking about it, it would be theft if the person doesn't know about it or consent to it. However the one I'm going to be picking up I've already spoken to him and he's cool with it, so not theft, just overkill. But most the fun of this is just building the device and watching it work anyway for me. Now, back on topic!

You can get dial up for nearly free. That is about the cheapest connection you can get. You won't be watching any movies, but it will get the job done.

    Theft

Not sure why you would post this, it is not like you didn't know this would turn into a flame fest.

    Re: Can I have internet?

Maybe not technically "theft" if the subscriber "allows" it, BUT...

Who knows what the actual ToS LEGALLY AGREED TO by the subscriber includes, concerning use by outside parties not living in the actual dwelling. I wouldn't be surprised if it is indeed illegal for the subscriber to "allow outsiders" to use it, under the terms of Comcast, CTL, WoW, etc. Those companies probably give you this service/pricing provided it's for the current legal residents of the dwelling.

Similar to DirecTV/Dish, who probably have the same thing. They charge thousands of $$$ extra to bars to (publicly) show the DTV/Dish broadcasts, sports, PPV, etc. It's not like a bar/restaurant is paying the same as we do in our house, lol.

Now that is not a legal matter, that'd be a violation of the contract, which is civil. I understand what you're saying, but haven't looked into that. This thread did not turn into as much fun as I thought it would.

    Re: Can I have internet?

It would turn into more fun if the OP sticks by the original plan of stealing Internet from people who haven't actually allowed him, and through their own ignorance of not locking down their modem/router. Luckily CTL/Comcast are pretty good about helping new subscribers setup an SSID and at least the minimal WEP key or whatever, for starters.

    Re: Can I have internet?

This is a touchy issue. I believe if you fail to lock your shit up then please keep your single from entering my house AKA trespassing. The old issue was because people paid per bit of information, that has not been so for a LONG time.

I lock my stuff up, and I think most do nowadays in a subdivision. If you don't you are asking for issues. It be like leaving your keys in the car, true its still theft but no one is going to feel sorry for you.

(10 years ago you could find every single person with a wireless router had it wide open) I know I used to drive around and use others...LOL Had cancelled it at home and being a CIO obviously used it at work...but sometimes I needed it outside of work. You also find some interesting porn too on peoples PC's...LOL

I'm not saying its 100% right, but its also not a HUGE deal.

Besides the OP might find a McDonald's with it open as they all do now. Or a Starbucks or many other locations that provide FREE WiFi. The days of this being a huge deal is over. It cost me nothing if someone is using mine.

Good point, and more power to people who are clever enough to push/skirt the limits. Agree it's not a giant stink nowadays, and really not "hurting anyone" too much.

What will it cost you if one of your neighbors repeatedly hits child porn sites through your IP?

I get what your saying, but there are potential consequences to leaving a wifi open.

Years ago at a previous job, we had one of our IT gurus leave a public FTP folder unsecure (accidental). In one weekend, the address got out and there was gigs of porn stashed there by Monday morning... and this was during dial up days.

If these people aren't securing their network, what makes you think they're securing their machines?

    Re: Can I have internet?

Remember a time when having a wireless router and SHARING your Internet was against the TOS from the various ISP's? I do!!! They did not like the thought of people sharing the cost, they wanted each home to have their own service. Many people do share the cost today, especially in apartment settings and from my understanding the ISP's are okay with it because they realize there is NO way for them to control this service.

HENCE WHY I SAID I LOCK MINE UP

I can relate this to a business situation. Our fence needed repaired. So we tore the old one down, my father in-law said "now watch the cockroaches find their way in"...it was going to take a few weeks to have time to secure a new one. Sure enough people (they being the cockroaches) started to cut across our property. It's actually amazing how quick it happened. Now in the eyes of insurance and smart business sense its the business owners responsibility to take action to secure their property. Even the law will question you as to why you left your property unsecured. Someone trips and brakes a leg you the property owner will be responsible (just like someone downloads child porn through your ISP). It be hard to not blame the Owner (whether a real business or that of the ISP connection if something happened because they FAILED to secure their goods).

I get what your saying, but there are potential consequences to leaving a wifi open.
Yep, and to play dumb and say "I never knew you could protect my signal" is just an scapegoat. Hard to blame someone for using your service when you are given the tools to protect yourself by the wireless router manufactures.

Years ago at a previous job, we had one of our IT gurus leave a public FTP folder unsecure (accidental). In one weekend, the address got out and there was gigs of porn stashed there by Monday morning... and this was during dial up days.
And that is why people need to take responsibility and lock their shit up. Your coming was to blame for leaving it open, but at the same time did it cost them anything!!! Well it might of back then when data was looked at differently...but it was also an easy DELETE and secure and a lesson to that IT guy why you don't leave stuff open.

If these people aren't securing their network, what makes you think they're securing their machines?
They aren't, hence why I made the comment that some interesting porn can be found on unsecured networks. But again that is not my problem, that is THEIR problem. LOCK IT UP

Got to be honest, if I was called to someone's house because they wanted to press charges on their neighbor for stealing their Internet, well let's just say no charges would be pressed.
