Been wanting to do the Coronado Highway for quite some time. I haven't been very active on this forum and don't think I know any of you guys, but I just may try to make part of this ride. Though, I'm still a bit slow on my new BMW K13S... you guys would probably leave me in the dust anyway

Clovis will be 2up on an FJR1300, your K1300S will be juuuuuuuuust fine.

AFAIK Grim, the dates are set for the 18th - 21st since that's when Mrs. Clovis is finished with spring semester. I may bug out for the Black Canyon leg as it's supposed to be day 4 of the ride.

Black Canon is Day 3 of the ride It's optional.

The entrence for Black Canon is on Highway 50 around Cimeron, CO if you look on the map. It's where you turn off and head towards Hotchkiss and the road gets really squigly on the map. Oodles of fun!!

Taking the Black Canyon takes you to Crawford, CO and puts you out at Carbondale CO. Do you like the 14 miles of Highway 7 between Peak 2 Peak and Lyons? Well Highway 133 (from Pionia to Carbondale) is just like 7 but 45 miles long. It's my #1 favorite road in Colorado.

Carbondale is just south of I70 so you can bug out on 70 or go up to Aspen and up and over Indie Pass which puts you out at twin lakes and highway 24. Go left to Leadville or right to Buena Vista for Colorado Springs.

To skip Black Canyon all together, simply remain on highway 50 all the way from Montrose, CO to Canon City, CO. After Canon take Highway 115 to Colorado Springs.

Highway 50 from Montrose to Canon City is fun too. It's not as twisty but contains a LOT of high speed sweepers. We'll take 50 from Canon to Montrose on Day 1. I love going over Monarch past heading west to east. Way more fun then east to west.

Re: Mark your calandars! Devil's Highway 2013!

Like others have mentioned, my bike is a 06 Yamaha FJR1300. I have zero issues keeping up but I tend to ride it more sport then sport touring. I've gone so far as to replace my pegs and take parts of my kick stand/center stand off because I'm grinding them away.

I'll be riding 2 up with my wife most likely, unless she backs out.

She's a real trooper and has done 3 day rides with me before. Heck, we crashed on our August anniversary trip last year and she got right back on and continued riding another 800 miles!

Here's a link to what I think is the proposed route. This looks like it's going to be an outstanding ride! C'mon Spring, get here already!

That's about right, except we'll do the spine twice.

Alpine AZ to Clifton, AZ and back.

    Grim - WTF?

(Edit) Also, it looks like my brother will be joining us for the trip. I don't know if he's going to ride from Eastern UT to the Springs the day before, or if he's going to meet us in Montrose. He'll be on a 2002 Hayabusa.

Above version is w/o the Canyon for those who decide to skip the Black Canon (Saves 100 miles or so).

    Version with Black Canyon:

C'mon, you know we need some Grim Productions for this trip. Clovis tends to rile up the natives and terrorize other riders when he's filming.

This is why I joined this forum for the most part. I'm mostly in, need to check with the other half.
May 18-20 is my preference, although I typically would prefer a pace of a 4 day trip so that there is maybe more time to take pics and sight-see, but 3 day trip will have to do due to lack of vacation time and seems like more people prefer 3day trip anyways.

Is there any comparison to Deal's Gap (Tail of the Dragon)? Just curious cause I have yet to find roads out here that come close to those coveted 13 miles of mountain twisties.

You'll be riding some of the best roads the west has to offer. The Devil's Spine being one, the Million Dollar Highway being another, and Black Canyon finishing it off. We wouldn't be making a trip like this if the roads weren't worth it.

In an article rating the 15 best motorcycle roads the Million Dollar Highway is ranked 4th, the Tail of the Dragon is 3rd. http://www.asphaltandrubber.com/news...ing-roads-ama/

Can't speak from experience but, guys I rode it with last year said it was a lot like Deals Gap but without the traffic. He was referring to Devils spine itself.
