    exhaust-wrapping??

Project 350z is in full swing - I have a roll & a half left over wrap and enough silicone spray to choke a horse…

Is the any benefit to wrapping my bike's exhaust? Has anyone done this and experienced any benefit? Any reason not to?

If you get caught in the rain the wrap will retain water longer.

I am not sure there is a good reason to wrap pipes on a motorcycle. I thouhgt they wrapped car headers to keep the engine compartment cooler and have a scavanging effect on cylinders. I do not think either of theses two reasons apply to a motorcycle.

Mines been wrapped for couple years now.

Only benefit I've noticed is a throatier exhaust note, less heat from the undertail exhaust, and it looks bad ass.

On the negative, pipes are stained/discolored now underneath the rap.

Wrapped on my VFR project. The subframe mod wouldn't allow me to use the OEM heat shield.

I've got an exhaust and it blows out smoke
If you get to close you'll probably choke

    Re: exhaust-wrapping??

The only reason to wrap is if you have serious heat concerns.

Otherwise it will just contribute to more brittle metal over time.

    Re: exhaust-wrapping??

Like Zach said. I recently read an article where a crew member was asked how their bike is so quick in Moto2. The crew member replied " a-lot of small changes adds up ". One of the things he mentioned was heat wrapping the headers. The reasoning he said was to reduce the exhast heat directed towards the engine. An engine running at high temps for a duration of time will show a slight decrease in power than when originally running at temp. It's not a big decrease, not even a small one, but it's enough of a decrease to use the heat wrap in a series where a uniform engine is used.

I tried to find the article but could'nt locate it. Hope this helps

    Re: exhaust-wrapping??

That brings up a question I have if anyone here knows, is there any manufacture that does this at the plant?

Also is there any particular reason you see this on V-twin bikes more than sportbikes? Do V-twins run hotter?

Vtwins run more or less same temp ranges as inline 4 or even parallel twins. On some vtwins though, exhaust routing can roast the riders thighs and calfs.

    Re: exhaust-wrapping??

In general, unless you need the reduced heat (Read Panigale), or like the aesthetics, you won't ever notice a difference. Unless you're turbocharged. The entire hot side of my turbo V6 Fiero is wrapped.

Yes, but not in terms of wraps like we're talking here. They normally use metal shields. The Cadillac Northstar has double-walled exhaust manifolds, and the new BMW crossflow turbo motors have hot sides wrapped with metallic and synthetic shields.

V-twins on their own actually run cooler, as their specific output is lower (Read your bike is slow). But with today's cooling systems, you'll never notice. One thing your SV specifically does encounter, is that your rear cylinder runs hotter than your front, quite significantly. If it could be kept as cool as the front, advanced timing curves and leaner fuel curves could probably yield 10hp.

But the 4's suffer from a similar probable with the middle two cylinders, just not nearly as bad.

For what it's worth, the wrapped exhaust would be 95% enclosed by the body…maybe 3" of exhaust duct that protrudes from the fairings.

    I agree with this statement…

I, by no means, am a superstar rider…I consider myself still in the begining phase of riding (15k miles over 3 years)…so would I notice a difference - probably not…does that mean there is no benefit…jury's still out...
