    Saddle Sore 1000? June 2013

I've been wanting to do this for a few years now but one excuse or another always seemed to come up.

Here's what I'm thinking. Iron Butt Saddle Sore 1K

For those not familiar, this is a 1,000 mile ride done in 24 hours. Being a timed ride it's best done either solo or with a partner. This is definatley not a large group ride. For your efforts you get a printed peice of paper and Iron Butt license plate bracket.

I shoot to cover an average of 50 miles per hour (which accounts for gas stops, little breaks, ect).

I would bring a snack for food in the interest of saving time -- typical time on this is around 18 hours.

    Here's the route I'm thinking: http://mapq.st/165rfLO

Basically it's the Durango route I ride over a weekend but going as far north as Granby to cross the 1000 mile threshold.

The longest days of the year are right around the corner (around June 20th - Coincidently also my birthday!).

Would anyone be interested in this?

I've always wanted to do this but cannot right now. Too much going on to bust my ass over anything other work. Good luck!

the paperwork's the biggest pain... having to keep all the receipts and log everything becomes tiresome real quick.

Just remember when planning your route. Toward the end you're tired and when the sun gets low, the critters come out to play.

When I did mine, our original route had slab in the morning and twisties at the end. I'm extremely glad we flipped the route. Also, when my buddy's bike died, we were on I-25 just north of Ft. Collins. Had we gone the other way, we would have been somewhere outside of Granby... Getting the trailer would have been exponentially more difficult.
Do not put off living the life you dream of. Next year may never come. If we are always waiting for something to change...
Retirement, the kids to leave home, the weather or the economy, that's not living. That's waiting!
Waiting will only leaves us with unrealized dreams and empty wishes.

350 miles is generally my max on the bike in a day but that is generally avoiding slabbing as much as possible. It seems hard to do one of these without spending a good amount of time on the slab - or at least not super twisty roads...

I've done that run in 22 hours (with a 3 hour stop for dinner). It's really fun :-). Would totally do it again.

Clovis, who in the hell do you afford to keep tires on the mother ship? One trip to the spine and back and I am almost due for new rubber.
Its not how fast you go, its how little you slow down.

Ha! I had new tires for the spine too. Just swapped them out for new rubbers but rain is in the forecast for the next 4 days

My work schedule is open next week but booked the following week. I'm thinking about taking off Wed-Friday next week to do this ride or something else. It's tempted to head back to the spine for 5 days with Sal.
