Add me to the "Clip-on master link failed" group...

I was coming home from Fort Collins today. Nice rain storm in northern Denver, followed by a solid mist from Monument Hill all the way to my place in the Springs.

I could feel my chain needed adjustment on the way home, which was weird because I just adjusted it about 1000 miles ago (chain only has about 7K on it.) Getting on it about a mile from my house, it starts clicking really bad for about 3 seconds, then I heard one loud click, followed by an absolute loss of power. I immediately shut the bike off in case it damaged my cases (it didn't), and coasted into the nearest parking lot.

Chain was still dangling from the chain guard, so I grabbed it and examined it. Still the right length minus the clip on master link.

Looks like rivet style for me from now on...

As for "bet it wasn't maintained" or whatever, I just cleaned and lubed it while I was up in Fort Collins yesterday. The master link was fine, and anyone who wants to examine the chain for signs of abuse is more than welcome to stop by and take a look at it.

Yeah, clip was the right way. One of those things they really emphasize at motorcycle mechanics school...

And yay Generic! Another rarity! Although that means there are 3 of us on here now... lol

You guys using a press fit clip link, or a dirt bike style clip link that can be assembled by hand? The press fit type requires 150 lbs. of pressure to install the side plate and requires a special tool. I've never had a press fit clip link fail.

I had two separate failures on my light weight racing chains on my Ninja 250. Once it spit straight out the back and once up through the undertail.
2nd time it was dbl. safety wired. Ordered rivet links after that. I would use rivet on most anything on the street.

I have a Motion Pro tool that works pretty well. Pricey but it works well.

    Press fit = rivet type.

I was using the normal (and street oriented) clip style. I got kinda lucky because I had mental images of the chain going through the windshield of any car behind me. Fortunately it stayed on my swingarm until I came to a stop.
I picked up a rivet type master link and a new chain today...

Already have the Motion Pro one, just didn't feel like using it on this one. Lesson learned.
