I'm eyeballing one for $6500 OTD and what do guys think? I want a reliable, cheap bike to commute on. And, they look fun as hell.
Thanks!

I rarely think of motorcycles without a little yearning. They are about moving, and humans, I think, yearn to move – it’s in our cells, in our desires. We quiet our babies with cyclic movement, and we quiet ourselves by going.

Do it. Good change of pace from your usual mega bikes. SM is fun as hell

I just bought it.
Sweet. Throw some of these on it and enjoy. A braided front brake line will do wonders too. You may also need a manual cam chain tensioner at some point.
There's a bunch of stuff you can do to get more power, but you're better off just accepting that it doesn't make that much and having fun with it. As someone who did the 450 stroker kit and watched a friend dump a boatload into a sisneros 475, if you want more power, you're better off buying a KTM 690.
Well, this is my second bike in my stable. The other is the one that's for moving my soul. I wanted something reliable, cheap, useful, and easy to care for. Insurance is also $17 a month, which is 1/10th the insurance of my other bike.
I trust Joe, so I blame this on him. If guys have a blast with 250 sportbikes, I will enjoy this at the track no doubt. I've been dying to get a small bike.
I wasn't saying you should get a 690, as you lose some of the cheap\reliable\etc, just saying modding a DRZ for power isn't worth it. My DRZ was probably the most fun bike I've owned to date, and a big part of that was that they are cheap, unintimidating, and hard to break.
That's good to know. I plan to just get some simple things like air filter, rejet, pipe, SS lines, pads, and some aesthetic things.
Do you recommend changing the gearing?
I don't live in CO anymore, so I mean ya...
Some stout metal handguards are a good idea too. Also, Avon Distanzia tires, specifically in the supermoto compound, are an awesome tire. They're expensive, but they're on par with a pilot power on pavement with a more progressive release and they do give you a little more grip in the dirt. A Q3 is a stickier tire for less, but with all of the dirt out here, I'd probably do it. You'd be surprised how well it does in dry dirt.
Here's my old one when it had Distanzia's on it...

@ blaming me
You're gonna love it man. Yea, the DRZ isn't a massive powerhouse. But, those mega supermotos (like my husky 450 that I had for a while) are waaaaay less reliable. Yours is gonna be indestructable and will have good range. It will feel odd at highway speeds at first but it's at least capable of doing such, unlike my husky.
do a sumo track day on it too. Feels SO weird compared to what we're used to. It's real fun to explore a different style of riding. Specially jumps too, that's fun as hell

Why wasn't the husky capable of hwy? Gearing?
I've got a FMF PowerCore 4 with quiet insert for a DRZ400. Maybe 3 hours on my DRZ sumo, $325 new, yours for only $200....and I will pay shipping.

Would I have to rejet with this? I'm new to carbs... Pending that, let me think about it.
I have two complete (header back) Yosh systems for sale $250. Let me know. I also have the big carb and I have hot cams for sale.
You'll want a jet kit anyway. See JD Jetting.

Yea they aren't set up to handle long distance at high speeds, just short burst of holy mother of god power. It was incredible on the track and darting around town, but I never took it on the highway at all. Some guys would complain about the clutch slipping after 10 mins of highway time

Yeah I'm going to go - 1/+2 when I get the tire fixed.
Just ordered a RS-2, Dynojet Stage 2, BMC filter, Silicone hoses, and AFAM sprockets w/ DID x-ring chain (0/-1 and +2), SS lines.
Can't wait, all performance mods. The aesthetics can wait, aside from the fender kit.
