    Moab in 3 days?

I have a 3 day weekend coming up (9/20 - 9/22). I recently bought a 2014 CRF250L and got through the initial break in and service (600 miles). I want to put some miles on it before I run out of good weather.

I am thinking a quick run out to Moab and back. I could leave Thur (9/19) night, stay somewhere, and get to Moab early Friday? Spend Saturday exploring and head back on Sun in one shot. If nothing else, I want to do a quick recon of the area for a longer return trip.

I can do 400 miles a day on my R6 without issue so I am not worried about that.

Anyone have any tips on getting out there and what to do?

Ya, I think I need to take into account I can't cover the same miles in a day compared to my R6. It is a challenge to stay at 75+ with the CRF. I would stay off the interstate both directions.

Ummmm. That doesn't sound healthy for that bike.

My advise would be trailer the bike. Enjoy a few of the easier trails and don't ride alone.

Wow, that's five hours in a straight shot just driving. I could not imagine riding a 250 on the back roads to get there. By the time you get there, you and the bike will be absolutely exhausted.

As a new dirt rider, I am quickly learning that keeping your body from reaching exhaustion levels (and water) is the key to having a good time.

A r6 and a 250 are so different. Let us know how it goes though, and I would definitely say that you need a riding partner. It just makes the whole trip safer and more enjoyable.

A long highway ride while breaking in a new bike is not ideal. Trailer it.

I just wanted to add an update to this thread since it got bumped.

I got rear-ended on the bike about 1 month after posting this, so it was out of action for a while. I got her all fixed up and broken in at this point. I have started buying some parts, racks, rotopax, luggage, tools, etc.

    I have reservations made for the 2nd weekend in May - 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13. I created an ADV thread with the information. - http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=947509.

I might add an extra day to the front for getting out there. If anyone wants to tag along PM me. I think the 2 campgrounds have room for 2-4 bikes and I think 8-10 people for the same price.

    Re: Moab in 3 days?

I forgot to update this after I got back. It was a pretty awesome trip even with some rain and having to avoid the last big snow storm of the year. The trip out and back was a piece of cake on the 250. I am looking forward to another adventure soon.

    Notes:
-I did the entire White Rim Trail and camped at Potato Bottom. It seemed like one of the better camping sites.
-There are real bathrooms on the trail.
-I could have easily done the entire trail in one day.
-Slickrock deserves at least 1/2 a day to explore. I might camp there next time.
