Terrible, it's amazing the things people do and that it ends up costing someone their life. And to not report it while the poor guy laid there dead is bullshit, I hope these bastards rot in jail. Maybe yet lets take them out and have them run into a a rope/chain and leave them laying there.

How did either of those idiots get a hunting license with 3 DUIs each and convictions for possession of a controlled substance? Unless they were hunting with a bow or a muzzle loader, they were violating federal law by being felons in possession of a firearm. I hope they spend the rest of their miserable lives in ass-rape prison.

I hope that the rider and his family find peace.
    Thanks, Jim

Re: Strange story of a motorcyclist who was killed by hunters

    What a couple of bastards!

They weren't hunting, they were poaching! Highway 92... I'm not sure where Mile Marker 47 is but that's either in Black Canyon or west of Hotchkiss, in either case not a hunting area let alone "hunting" from the highway. They shot the elk from the side of the road and then used a rope tied to a truck to drag the elk's corpse. With the rope and chain strung across the road at chest height, the rider struck it... think war movie boobie trap with a thin metal wire set across the road at neck height.

    RIP rider.

Court records say on Oct. 12, 2013, Valdez and Keener each shot an elk sometime in the morning on Highway 92 near mile marker 46 in Montrose County.

Court records say while the rope and the chain were across the highway at chest level, Rawson was heading westbound on Highway 92 on his motorcycle.

Investigators learned Valdez say Rawson while in the driver's seat of his truck and "leaned out the window and began waving his arms back and forth, attempting to get his attention to stop."

But Rawson continued driving. His chest and helmet hit the rope "causing a severed spinal cord and his death," according to court records.

The records show the teenager asked Valdez what to do. Valdez asked him to help unhook everything and "not say anything to anyone."

Keener got a separated shoulder, possibly from holding onto the elk or rope at the time Rawson struck the rope.
The grand jury indictment says both Valdez and Keener left the scene without calling 911. They returned to the scene and lied to the troopers about calling for help.
Court documents also say both men denied using the rope and "insisted the motorcyclist "just crashed," that "they didn't not see anything." They also lied about having the 16-year-old boy with them.

Why? Is it because it happens to be on a road that you ride fairly regularly and could have easily happened to you? Otherwise it sounds like a story of stupidity all around. Two dumb poachers, and a rider not aware of his surroundings. RIP rider.

Re: Strange story of a motorcyclist who was killed by hunters

It's a popular moto road and it's difficult to see a rope or chain strung across the road at dusk when this happened. The rider had to be distracted by the idiot waving his arms and it could have happened to any rider.
