You might want to consider getting that family on the corner a $20 gift card or something. They probably don't appreciate the car and motorcyclists doing wide open blasts in their section I mountain paradise, and for them to not only not be upset, but to do so much to help was truly remarkable. Just my opinion, but I'd get them 10-20 bucks to a restaurant.

And props to bluedog for doing what he did.

Ohhh man, that totally sucks about your bike!
Hopefully it won't be a huge cost to repair :-(

Fay myers just called - regulator rectifier and battery are the culprits.

On a side note - they quoted me $560 OTD. Seems a bit high, no?

For their service dept., it sounds about right.

It's about as good a time as any for me to start fixing my own crap

A buddy who's pretty mechanically inclined said he'd be happy to help - if I were to order parts online and get the bike trailered back to his place, would it be worth the cost to do it myself?

That depends. Do you have the time, tools, and inclination to do it yourself? You'd save $450 or so, but for a lot of people they'd rather pay and have it done for them.

I'd be willing to bet your battery is fine. I wouldn't jump to replacing it right away.

Well, I figure that $100 diagnostic fee is a sunk cost.

Looking at the parts, I can probably get a rectifier for roughly $100-130, and a battery for another $100. My friend does have tools. So....give or take I'd save myself $150? I'd be paying the guy in beer anyways. How hard could it be? (famous last words)

It isn't really hard. And I wouldn't replace the battery until you verify it's bad.

My bike did the same thing. Ended up frying the stator and the regulator rectifier. Plus the gasket it cost me like $320 bucks. I never did it before, but I did it myself and it wasn't too bad. You don't even have to replace the stator. Literally that job should take less than an hour and should be fairly easy.

I wouldn't pay them $300+ for an hour of work. Do it yourself. I can help out if you want! Just did mine about a month ago. Let me know .

Verify that battery as well. Mine ended up being fine. Just needed a recharge.

Your first purchase should be a service manual (around $30). You could have save the diagnostic fee with a $10 multi-meter by following the very detailed trouble-shooting steps in the manual.

Reg / rec and battery is cake. I used to change mine monthly on my 95 Honda. You can also get one on ebay for a little cheaper. Look on the forums and see if there is a compatible version from another bike or year that gets more air flow. That solved my problem.

Called and asked them to hold off on the install of the parts, but they're still hitting me with their $100 "diagnostic fee"

Well I'd expect them to still charge a diagnostic fee, that's fair. But I don't know if 100 is excessive or not, that's like over an hour's worth of labor which does seem a bit high.

They are a bit steep. But they do good work for the most part.

    Re: deckers run, sat 5/3

I don't mind Fay Myers I have had work done there but each time things always seem a bit dirty. As in with my oil change there was dripped oil on the fairings that was not cleaned, during my tire change there was chain lube all over the swingarm and rims from their chain adjustment, and the last time for a front sprocket change there was some greasy black prints from oily hands all over my silver carbon fiber (actually even stained the white back part and outer edges that you can see) and greasy fingerprints all over the sprocket cover. I tend to keep things very clean so this was something I noticed right off the bat in my 3 service appointments I've had.

I noticed on the invoice that the diagnostic fee dropped to $50 if I had them install the parts, and that was not including the $150 they were estimating in labor.

Ya most shops do it that way, in fact most car shops take off the diagnostic completely if you have them do the work. But bikes are different.
