HWY 114 - Gunnison to Center CO

** Updated on Post# 24 to include report of route taken.

Anyone have any details on this road? Trying to make it part of a larger 3 day ride but I can't find any details on its quality.

    Thanks in advance,

I've taken this road in my truck. It was about 2008 when I took it. I do not remember the road being bad in any spot. It is a road I have wanted to take the bike back to and run. I just haven't been able to make it back there yet. Hopefully there is someone else with more current conditions.

I've been wanting to try that road for a long time as well, but it always involves adding another 20+ miles to the ride while monarch pass is already such a known good road. Zoomed in on google maps it definitely appears paved. Looks nice and curvy, and remote: good recipe for fun.

It's a nice alternative to Monarch, if you want something other than high speed sweepers. Road surface (in years past) is in decent shape. Ahh.. the gunbarrel to Center... straight shot between the sights of two lava flows, hit it with no construction zones and radar detector full on.

Thanks guys. I am giving some serious thought to the route below this weekend and if so, will report back on the status of HWY 114. Any other suggestions to the route below are welcomed.

Route requires overnight stay in Gunnison and Southfork; Leaving at noon on Friday for Gunnison and returning home mid-afternoon Sunday.

I have done a similar route in the past with just one nights stay. Its doable but its rushed. I want to spend a little time in Telluride and enjoy the evenings in that part of the state. Looking at a cool B&B in Southfork that should be pretty cool. I probably should have also mentioned that the wife will be riding her bike so blazing the highway is a little harder.

I have not ridden 114, but no way would I consider skipping Hwy 149 for it.

Lake City loop (149) is a great ride, too!

Decisions decisions. May have to flip on coin on these two options.

I remember the south half of 114 being decent, follows a creek/stream, watch for farm equipment and old pickup trucks going below the limit.

Agree that 149 > 114, if you have the time since 149 will take 2-3 times as long.

Plus the extra time on 160 might be close to same. Really, 114 looks like an ordinary commuter route on the map. Hwy 149 thru Creede, over Slumgullion Pass, and Lake City is one of the best rides in the state. And Hwy 50 back to Gunnison has some really sweet sweepers running along the river.

Gonna run this route using 149 in reverse of you, staying in Durango Friday night and hitting 550 in the morning. If you see a fat guy on a red VFR it'll most likely be me.

Our paths should cross for sure. I will be on my black S1000RR and my wife is on a white 675R.

Going to tag on to this thread, heading out that direction this weekend and have never ridden or driven anything in this state SW of Gunnison (expect 160). If I am wanting to ride 92 outside Gunny, what is a better way to head south: 149 or 550? I will be coming home through Taos, thus I will only get to ride one of these two roads. Thanks

I'd take 149 on a weekend day. If you have time, head on over to Hwy 65 and ride the Grand Mesa. There is a nice lodge, grocery store, diner or two in Cedaredge.

Matrix, don't know if you'll see this but heads up. There's several construction zones just west of Pagosa Springs on 160. Nothing major but each one does go down to one lane of traffic at a time. 160 was also Windy as he'll today from South Fork to Durango. The road up on Slumgullion Pass isn't in the greatest shape. Also saw several Sheriffs throughout my ride on 149. Actually there were quit a few cops throughout my whole ride today. I even earned a performance award.

I thought I saw you. Good ride for sure. I will post up a trip report later tonight. Going to mix me another drink to celebrate the ride and begin the process of cleaning off the layers of bugs.

Glad you had a good safe ride! I had a downpour and hail to do the cleaning for me when I got back into town yesterday.

Re: HWY 149 - With Ride Report

Tis the season for long rides and ride reports! We left Arvada Friday afternoon a little after 4:00 and arrived in Gunnison thirty minutes before dusk to start day 1. Had some dinner and beer and called it a night. Had some nice dreams of Monarch pass and was looking forward to hitting it again.

Day 2 took us to Telluride, the million dollar highway, and wolf creek pass. Some of the best riding this state has to offer all in one day and with the run off, it was waterfall after waterfall! We had lunch in Durango and then stayed at a great B&B in Southfork call the Arbor House (highly recommended for couples). Had a few beers and slept like I have not slept in a longtime. Not a care in the world type sleep!

Day 3 took us from Southfork up HWY 149 to Clear Creek Falls and Lake City, onward towards home we got our second go round with Monarch pass.

All and all, great roads, great scenery, and some quality time on the bike. This is a great time of year to get out there and the weather held up great for us.

    Miles: 888
