    Starter issue?

So my bike had sat for awhile through winter with a battery tender. I recently tried to start it when I moved houses. It just made a buzzing/clicking sound. Not having much time to screw with it I ran it down the driveway and popped the clutch. Started right up. This is a 2005 r6.

I ordered a new relay thinking that was the issue. I just put it on and it made the same noise. I then took some pliers (with rubber handle) and jumped the relay connection. It sparked, but no crank. Is my starter dead?

thanks for any input on this subject matter!

Clicking sound usually means the battery is toast, get your battery tested.

I put it on a charger and it read full charge. That was my first thought was battery. But when I turn the key on I have full electrical power.

Forgot I had a volt meter. So it's 13.4 volts when off. Drops to 12.5 volts when I turn it on. And 12.5 volts also at the starter relay.

So when it clicks does the tachometer/instrument cluster flicker as well or just clicks constantly?

Battery. Take it and have it load tested.

Remove the battery from your bike, use jumper cables and attach to the correct leads on bike, attach to your truck with truck off, start bike. If bike starts it's your battery.

Also check the ground connection to make sure it is clean and tight, both at the batter and at the engine cases.

Sounds like the problem's solved, but for conversation's stake I'll share a relevant recent experience.

Rockerbabe88's '03 R6 hadn't started since we installed NRC engine case covers a while ago. While I overlooked this correlation, I bought a battery and an ebay used starter. It turns out the stater side NRC case cover jammed the starter clutch or geartrain somehow in a way the stock cover did not. Upon further inspection, the top and bottom crank cases were not machined quite flat to each other. The mismatch is only maybe a couple thousandths of an inch, but was enough to bind the whole subsystem. The final fix was to crank down all bolts that connected the case cover to the bottom crank case and just finger tight the remaining bolts so they aren't bending the NRC cover. Hopefully the copious RTV will transfer load appropriately in a crash.

Double up the gaskets, or discard the thrust washer on the starter idler.
