1. BRAIN
Riders have a finely tuned visual cortex (which interprets information like perception, motion and distance) and cerebellum (vital for co-ordination, balance and precision).

2. EYES

MotoGP riders can race for a whole lap without blinking.

3. HEIGHT

Relatively short, hardly ever taller than 6ft. The lighter the rider, the faster the ride. The average height for this season is 5ft 7in, while title-contender Dani Pedrosa is the shortest at only 5ft 2in.

4. HEART

A normal resting heart rate is around 70 beats per minute, while a typical MotoGP rider's heart ticks over at around 190bpm when racing. Valentino Rossi is the master of controlling his heart rate (to preserve energy), maintaining a bpm in the low-hundreds.

5. HYDRATION

MotoGP riders can lose up to 2kg of body liquid during the hottest races. Dehydration can cause confusion and slowed responses, and so high-tech ventilation systems are built into the helmets and leathers to limit perspiration. Suits carry re-hydrating drinks, linked up with the helmet.

6. LEATHERS

Full body suits are made from kangaroo leather, which is lighter, more flexible and more resistant than cow hide. They include cooling systems to regulate body temperature and self-contained airbags. Detachable 'knee sliders' are made from low friction thermoplastic compounds, and riders can go through 100 pairs in a season.

7. INJURIES

The number of crashes during the course of a MotoGP season often exceeds 500. The most commonly sustained injuries are a broken, or dislocated, collarbone.

8. THE BIKE

Unlike in F1, with the driver perfectly still in his car, a MotoGP bike is effectively an extension of the rider's body, with every single physical movement affecting the course of his motorcycle. Riders withstand incredible force of around 1.2g on turns.

9. DISTANCE COVERED

Average race distance is 70 to 75 miles, but increases to about 220 miles with practice runs and qualifying. That's 4,000 miles a year, 60,000 miles in a 15-year career.

10. PAY

The wealthiest MotoGP star is Valentino Rossi, with earnings totalling £28 million, according to The Forbes World's Highest-Paid Athletes list 2013 (the highest-paid F1 star, Fernando Alonso, earned £38 million).
