DATE CHANGE! CSC! Let's ride to DURANGO! Sept 13th & 14th!

    CSC Goes to Durango 2014!

Date updated to the following weekend!

Looking for one last "hurrah" of the 2014 riding season? Want to ride with your favorite forum members? Want to experience a "Clovis Ride" but without the "Clovis Pace"? Then this CSC ride is for you!

What it is: A two day ride with an overnight stay in Durango, CO!

Pace: Spirited but reasonable. Ride your own ride. If you're slower, we won't leave you behind! We'll wait at every turn off.

Skill level: Advanced Beginner to intermediate. This is a very fun but not terribly difficult or dangerous ride. I completed this same ride with 2 months riding experience back in the day. Follow the rule of riding your own ride and within your skill level and you will do just fine!

Everyone will be provided a map with mark way points noting fuel stops and highway changes.

Meet: Jan's Restaurant in Buena Vista.
    304 U.S. 24, Buena Vista, CO 81211
    719) 395-6940

8AM if you want some amazing breakfast! 9AM if you skip breakfast (or run late). Lunch will be in Ouray just before tackling Million Dollar Highway!
9AM Be gassed and ready to depart!

Gear: Really up to you. Without a Helmet, Jacket and Gloves at a minimum.

Note on packing: I highly recommend a tail bag over a oversized tank bag or a back pack. A back pack will work but you will be much more comfortable with the bag strapped via a cargo type net over your tail or passenger seat.

Estimated Cost: $200 for fuel, lodging and food.

Hotel: Most likely will be at the Iron Horse Inn. Friendly hotel and typically the host for this trip and recently completed their renovation process! The rooms are 2 levels and huge by motel standards!

    Route:

    Day 1:
    http://goo.gl/maps/UjrUc

451 miles (from Colorado Springs. Denver area add 10-20 miles.

Day 1: You will ride legandary Colorado raods, such as...!

    Independence Pass
McClure Pass / Highway 133 awesomeness
    Black Canyon!
    Million Dollar Highway, south bound!

    Day 2: http://goo.gl/maps/E1Mai

    424 Miles (To Colorado Springs)

Highlights include such amazing roads as...!

    Wolf Creek Pass
    Lake City
    Monarch Pass
    Highway 50 sweepers
    Cripple Creek
Decker's (if going back to Denver)

Figure a round trip of at least 900 miles. If the group is interested in adding 100 miles to Day 2, I have a much more interesting route for back home that takes us through New Mexico! Highway 64 speed sweepers, Carson National Speedway, Taos, Cimarron National Raceway, Cuchara Pass, Bishop's castle.

Want to go? Reply here or PM me.

Questions? Post them here or PM me.

Just got back from there. Roads are in pretty good shape, lots of rain altho the weekend looks good.
Road construction on the south side of Wolf Creek Pass, expect a delay (we sat for a good 20 min)
Dress warm; pretty chilly all day in the higher elevations.

    Bump!

Come on people! This is a fun ride at an easy pace and doesn't involve 500-600 mile days!

    So far myself and Ezzzzrider.

From my Saddle Sore 1K two months ago:

Ouray (the north end of Million Dollar)

Silverton - Midway point on the MDH between Ouray and Durango:

I'm a maybe... Need to look in to my schedule and see if I can find either a tail bag or a net to strap my backpack to the back. Bungie cords would work right?

Yep, made a Durango run at end of July, roads were mostly good other then lots of touristas. I couldn't squeeze in the Hwy 92 route west of Blue Mesa Res and ended up going through Delta and then over McClure Pass. It was so frickin' hot coming through Delta I was seriously considering taking a dip in Paonia Res, heh. What a difference 45 days makes. Sorry I won't make it.

Yeah, just get one of those cargo bungie cords with the hooks and you'll be able to secure your back pack to the passenger seat/tail. They're like $7 at any motorcycle store.

Shame you missed out on 92, Black Canyon is a very fun ride with very few cars to pass spaced miles apart.

It does get hot in late July though! I've had that same temptation to ride the bike right into the lake!

End of June wasn't too bad. I did my Saddlesore 1K on June 28th. Kind of strange arriving in Pagosa Springs (500 miles into the 1005 mile ride) at 2PM and Durango at 3PM. I tackled MDH at close to 4PM and ran into a lot of RVs and packs of Harleys. My two least favorite groups to pass in the mountains.

FYI 67 to CC is very rough, lots of patches.

I've ridden it a few times this season, I didn't think it was too bad. 67 is a fun little road, just not one I would ride MotoGP on because of some rough patches and blind uphill turns that become downhill turns without a sign to let you know if the bend is left, right or straight.

That's optional though. Another option would be Highway 9 to 24 (Hartsel) and from there taking back 285 to Denver or 24 to Woodland Park and from there Deckers to Denver or straight to Colorado Springs.

Just curious, what time would KSU be? I just realized it's 2+ hrs for me to get to Buena Vista.

Never mind, it's right there in a big black box! Not sure how I missed it.

I'm still a maybe on this... but I will post on here for sure whether I'm going or not as it gets closer. Plus this is a free Bump! for the thread

Question: Do reservations need to be made in advance for the hotel in Durango? Or do you guys just show up?

I may meet you guys on Hwy 133 again. I'll follow you into Durango. Just to make sure you make it safely. I do question your pace tho Clovis. Spirited but reasonable? Have you slowed down? I'd say passing 10 harley's at 110+ around a sweeper in a 35mph is bordering on illegal. Ah good times.

Hope you can meet us along the way!

I have been making an effort to take it easy on my rides as of late. My greatest fear is my daughter growing up without me.

    It wasn't 10+ Harleys anyways

Re: DATE CHANGE! CSC! Let's ride to DURANGO! Sept 13th & 14th!

Updated the first OP to move the date out to the following weekend.

High chance of rain this weekend and 2 people had to drop out for this weekend last minute.

So if you wanted to make this trip but couldn't make the dates work, here's a 2nd chance!

Hope you can make it Al!

Pogasa Springs is a possibilty. On the route I had us heading to Durango from Montorse on day 1 to we can ride MDH from Ouray to Durango which in my opinion is a better ride than Durango to Pagosa Springs.

So we could push through Durango to get the last 60 miles to Pagosa or we could even dip down through New Mexico and head back to Colorado through Pagosa.

If we stayed in pagosa we would hit MDH on day 2. It would be clockwise. It would be a blast to sit in those pools after day of riding. Would u do that?

Sounds good to me if the other guys agree. There's a few different routes to get to Pagosa Springs that I can present.

Here are the routes leaving from Buena Vista so add 90-110 miles to figure your total day's mileage.

Aspen > McClure/133 > Black Canyon > Lake City > Wolf Creek Pass > Pagosa Springs

    Down via New Mexico:

Let's do 92 (black canyon) on a way back. I'd prefer day one to be a little easier and head south from BV. I'd like to spend more time in Pagosa Springs.
