I rarely think of motorcycles without a little yearning. They are about moving, and humans, I think, yearn to move – it’s in our cells, in our desires. We quiet our babies with cyclic movement, and we quiet ourselves by going.

RIP rider. The bike is an air cooled 4 cylinder and judging by the tires and wheels I would say early 80s. Looking at the scene and where thr truck is damaged i would say it is teh classic left turn in front of rider
This really sucks. RIP rider.
Actually passed by the scene before the cops were there. Needless to say it was very graphic. The person who hit the rider was crying on the phone and had to hide her eyes from the view. Very sad.

I gather from looking at the pics and talking to the boyfriend of a witness that it was a service truck. It looks like he never saw the bike and he pulled a left turn in front... and the motorcyclist t-boned him.
My eyewitness said he was cut literally in half, intestines flying everywhere. I saw the side of the truck; the (really bent) step-bar is what sheared the biker in two. There is no damage to the side of the vehicle - so I think the motorcyclist braked super-hard and the front end slammed down on the pavement, and the bike went underneath the service truck... and his torso didn't.
If this is accurate, it makes the case very well for two things:
1. Using your natural manuverability to avoid striking a vehicle; it's probably preferable to go on an offroad jaunt than to hit someone.
2. ABS - you can slam on the brakes as hard as you want and you won't lock up a wheel. This means you can still manuver. Keep riding it until the last moment!
My thoughts go out to the family.

Oh my God, thank you for scaring the crap out of me. Just last Friday on my black canyon ride I had an oncoming car make a left handed u-turn in front of me. I went into the oncoming lane to avoid. Tourist.
Something like this happens on average once every 2 to 3 rides.
Now i have a visualization of what could happen. Good god, what a horrible way to go. My heart aches for him and his family.

"If not us, who? If not now, when?"
Clovis said it. Fuck....
You can't avoid every situation, but you can mitigate a lot of them. You have to know where you can go as you approach someone who is looking to turn left. You _have_ to be actively dealing with the situation as you approach.
Also, this time of year (equinox), you have to be really on guard when you're traveling east-west in the morning and the evening because the Sun is right behind you and someone turning left is looking into the Sun.

"A strict observance of the written laws is doubtless one of the high duties of a good citizen, but it is not the highest. The laws of necessity, of self- preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property, and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means."

The most telling image - http://photos.timescall.com/2014/09/...ident-92214/#2Investigators said a 34-year-old male from Longmont was headed south on U.S. 287 on a 1992 Yamaha motorcycle in the left lane.
As the motorcyclist came to the intersection of U.S. 287 and Niwot Road, he swerved to avoid a truck that also was traveling south on U.S. 287 that had stopped at the intersection as the light turned red.
The motorcycle turned on its side and slid into the intersection, where the rider was hit by a 2012 GMC pickup truck making a turn onto Niwot Road from northbound U.S. 287.
The motorcyclist was declared dead on scene. Speed is not suspected in the crash, but the rider was not wearing a helmet, according to Reid.
