You'd be surprised by how pissed off locals can get at times. Maybe it's just my bad luck, because two of the three times I've been pulled over it's been because the group made illegal passes. Safe or not, all it takes is a "concerned" citizen and a cell phone. There's nothing like riding into a small town to find sheriffs swarming out of their station like a disturbed wasp nest. Needless to say, I can wait for a legal passing zone now.
Don't get me wrong, I ride fast and certainly do my share of sketchy passes. It's just that in this particular case, we were going up that long straight hill out of Buffalo Creek with houses lining both sides and an unusually low speed limit. Anyone that's done a Deckers ride knows that there are some nice long stretches just a mile or two later with plenty of room to pass and higher speed limits. Most people would have waited...that's all I'm saying.

That's true.
It was the straight part of the road right before the speed limit increases past 30. I think we were past the few houses along the road at that point but maybe not.
A perfectly safe pass in other words but I can see the noise complaint.
I may not always pass legally but I always pass safely.
