Need title advice in short order if you can

I want to buy this bike - http://denver.craigslist.org/mcy/4728616487.html

I called and spoke with them, they stored the bike for someone and that person skipped town and left everything. They have a contract saying the previous owner foreited the property, copies of the certified letters that were sent, everything, include the key except the title.

If I wanted to title it, is that going to be a huge PITA? What if I just make it a track bike?

First thing I'd is run the VIN for theft. That's all I've got, sorry.

What Birch said. Run the VIN just to be sure. If it's going to be a track only bike, then who cares about the title.

Yes first thing is make sure there is not a loan on it. If it still belongs to the bank nothing you can do.

Now with that said what you would basically have to dobis a get a mechanics lean on it. This is a very very very very long drawn out and expensive route.

Now with that said there is another way if you have a towing company that you are very very very close to. Not really a legal way to do it but I have seen it done.

If you want more info on getting the title by means on a mechanic lean I will be happy to lay out the process for you. But it does suck.

You can actually get a title in CO with just a Bill of Sale (assuming the VIN is clean). You will have to post a bond for some time (not sure how long or how much). Probably beats the mech lien bit.

No no no no. This idea would just open you up for a big fail. First off the person selling the bike is not the legal owner of the bike. If the original owner has a title they would be able to come at you very quick in court with the original title and take the bike back.

Only way to do this would be to kill the original title. Not to mention technically the person selling this bike has no legal means to actually sell it. They have no proof of ownership.

No title and not even having registration in their name all sounds bad.

I've said this a bunch on here. Purchasing a bike without a title is a very bad idea.

Or buy a gen1 frame and swap it all over.... I think I get the title issues now.
Applying for a lost title just gets you a second class title. The original holder can always come back if they care to.

You can do a Colorado Title search with the department of Revenue for about 6 bucks at their office at 20th and Pierce in Lakewood. It will show the last known address of the owner of record, as well as any liens on the title. Proceed with caution.
