    Colorado winter storing insurance question..

One thing I've learned about CO in the 6yrs I've been here, is when it comes to license/tag/insurance, they're going to get their money.

my question is...1)I've a bike currently tagged and insured that I plan on selling in the spring. No intention of it being ridden till then. 2) I've just bought a second bike that I will be insuring and tagging ASAP.

can I legally (through the DMV) swap plates to newest bike and just lower the ins on the non ridden bike till it sells?

I remember when when I moved here, I had a bike in GA in pieces. When I brought it here and assembled, they raped me with fines for "having a title to a bike that wasn't licensed." I fear this would be the case with said bike, but don't know exactly cause "I" won't be replating.

    thanks for any insight.

Is the bike you intend to sell financed, or do you own it outright? That will make a significant difference in what type of coverage you need to maintain. As far as tax and tag, the new owner would be responsible, and the clock starts for them as of the date on the bill of sale. You can transfer your existing plate to your new bike and get at least some credit for the remaining registration, but often it's not worth the hassle, as they only credit you for the registration, not the taxes or fees.
    Thanks, Jim

Thanks for the reply. Yea, there's no liens of any kind. Learned that lesson in my early age.

Just to be clear- you're saying I can drop insurance completely on the non ridden bike without worrying about any issues, barring natural disasters, and the new owner will also not have any "back" fines, etc?

The only way they'd let you swap the current plates over onto the new bike is if the current bike has been legally sold, otherwise those plates belong to that bike as long as it remains under your ownership. They'll do a pro rated deal to swap the same plates if when you do sell the bike the plates are still within their active year. If your insurance rates are not high then keep it covered till you sell it cause you never know what can happen. Better safe than sorry

I dont think he would have a problem moving the plates over at this point... Unless you have to show a bill of sale showing that the bike has a new owner? My experience has been "I sold xxx car and need to move the plates to yyy car" and have never had a problem.

Lets say that you were able to move the registration over to the new bike, there would be no penalty to you or the new owner if you didnt have the bike registered.

He can ask but as far as I understand the plate number clears once the bike is either sold or it won't be on the street anymore. Once that bike sells, then the plate is clear to be transferred to the new one. Again, from what I understand.
