Land Speed Racing Assoc. Coming to Colo, need some tips

    Hello,
the Land Speed Racing Assoc. is coming to Colorado this year in September to give people an opportunity to make some 1 mile top speed runs. I have been drag racing for many years and would like to give this a shot. My current trap speeds in the 1/4 mile average 150 mph. I would like to increase that by at least 50 mph to try and get a 200 mph time slip in a mile run.

If anyone has some "first hand" experience at doing top speed runs ( and I don't mean out on the street), please let me know what kind of prep, is needed and any tips for a first timer at doing this.

Thanks......................you can also reach me direct at Chunkybeastracin@aol.com

Mike, all the tech requirements are found on their website here... https://www.usmileracing.com/registration/

You'll need all the basic stuff, like steering damper, metal chain guard, tether kill switch, safety wired drain plug and axle pinch bolts. Besides that, stuff like proper Z rated tires is a no brainer, and having a SNELL helmet and full leathers.

Now, there is a lot of other stuff like making sure you have the right gearing for 200mph, I'm assuming you are spraying to be trapping 150mph, so making sure you have your tune safe enough to be able to handle a 1 mile run vs a simple 1/4 mile run, making sure you have enough nitrous, proper body position, etc... going 200mph isn't as easy as people think. And it is especially hard here at elevation.

I plan on going myself, and this will be my first official event. I have a lot of experience on the street though with running a bike at those speeds, so if you want to hear my suggestions just let me know.

I couldn't find the entrant fee, or where they are running this at?
I will be at work anyhow, but curious for next years event?
Hopefully will have my 1287 installed with OD 5/6 gears and spray by then.

Location is the Front Range Airport, 30 miles east of Denver. Not sure why they don't have that on their other page, but it's on this one... http://myemail.constantcontact.com/A...id=NZlUfNt6zss

Price hasn't been announced yet, it's stated it will be announced in the next month. I'm guessing it will be on par with most other races like this, so anywhere from $300-500.

Well that isn't terrible.. the Texas "mile" is now a half mile due to runway deteriation anyhow.
Maybe I'll get mine ready and let Hibs go wring it out for me...

Front Range has two runways that are 8000', that leaves barley a half mile for shut down. Is that typically sufficient for events like this?

Does the 8000' include taxiway and runoff? The start line will be at the very edge... standing start so not much space required.
1/2 mile should be plenty for experienced drivers. Keep in mind there will be very few that approach 200 mph in reality at this altitude.
Texas Mile has 1/2 mile shutdown, and has speeds of 278... http://www.texasmile.net/pdf/TTM_Cha...ds_Eye_Map.pdf

1/2 mile is plenty of shutdown

It's 8000' from dirt to dirt.

I asked because I just have no real frame of reference for the distance required to shut down to zero from 180+. After giving it more thought, though, I realize that at HPR I can slow from 160ish to 70ish in about 600' on the back straight, so, yeah, 2600' should be plenty as long as there are no failures.

    Have fun!

Mike did you get registered? I got yanked on a 5 week business trip to the east coast so I had to skip. But now I might be home late on Friday the 4th. Still not enough time to get bike prepped. I'm contemplating coming up and spectating. You need help in the pits?
