    Heh... Hehe.... Hahahaha.... BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

So I just called Fay to ask how much they would charge me to have a rear tire mounted (on-bike) for Amy Lou....

Now granted, I did not buy the tire at Fay but I did at least spend multitudes of thousands of dollars more, having purchased the bike from them.

    Their response...

    $98.50 + $7.00 in government fees.
    $105.50 total.
    1 rear tire swap.
    Yeah.

    Carry on.

Meh... a rear tire on the bike is probably, what... an hour job? So that price makes some sense at around $80-90 an hour, which is what I think they charge.

On a different note, doing it yourself is pretty damn cheap.

An hour? Really? Maybe if the tech who's doing it is blindfolded or in the middle of an Asthma attack or something. Keep in mind, this is a single-SA sportbike, not a Goldwing where you have to remove bodywork to get to the wheel.

I would venture to say that in a proper motorcycle shop with modern tools and equipment, any mechanic worth his salt could perform a rear tire swap for my bike in 30 minutes. At a casual pace.

But yes... I concede that they are entitled to charge what they want to charge.

on a single sided swing arm it should be a lot faster than an hour, insanity. I can mount and dismount tires at my shop faster than that. If I had a single sided stand I'd do it for ya

Even with the cords showing and the possible risk, I think I'll happily ride it over to MadMoto for them to service it. I just called and chatted with Steve and even though the tire is not a purchase from them, he quoted me $45 on-bike. <--- Take note Fay Myers Service Dept.

Now to figure out how I'm going to strap that bitch to my back for the ride over!

Just FYI, the GL is a SSA and no need to remove bodywork on it. The BMW K1200, however, you have to pull the damn exhaust to pull the tire, and I only wish I was kidding.

$100+?!?!? It takes 20 minutes to do BOTH tires... My buddy just did mine for me in that time. Gave him $20.

There's what, 3 to 5 bolts and a cotter pin to pull the rear off?

There's actually only a locking pin and a single 55mm nut that has to be removed with a special socket tool.

I was absolutely shocked at Fays prices for changing tires that were not purchased there.

Years ago it seemed like it was much cheaper because they realized that it brought people through the doors. Now it seems like they are trying to stick it to anyone that doesnt purchase their tires from them.

    Re: Heh... Hehe.... Hahahaha.... BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

I am ready to comment here, take it as you wish but these are the facts. Tire labor is calculated at a flat rate of .8 hour which would be $94.40. The $98.50 was a misquote but I realize $4 isn't much at this level. I do realize this hits people with single sided swingarms as they are much easier but from a practical point there is no way to have a unique tire rate for each model. Regarding the .8 hour I looked up 6 bikes (4 sport, 2 cruiser) and they all had a rear tire time of .9 to 1.4 in the factory flat rate manuals.

The $30 price when you buy the tire is a huge discount, that barely covers paying the tech.

    Re: Heh... Hehe.... Hahahaha.... BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

    Fey is expensive for everything.

That's a big reason why I bought a no-mar tire machine last year. $600 initial investment - but even off the bike I was paying $60 to mount a front/rear. Adds up!

I think the best deal around for "off the bike" mounting is Performance at $25/ea. If you buy from them, it's still $20/ea, which isn't much of an incentive to buy your tires from them (although they often do have good prices on tires).

If you buy the tire at tfog and bring him the wheel, he only charges $13/tire to install.

Cheaply priced tires ($15 less than I can find online) and $13 a wheel.. cant beat it!

Ya know? Flat rate is supposed to be based off of a 5 year experienced mechanic with all tools laid out and prepped, bike on stand already. If he can't do both tires in under an hour, he really needs to reconsider his profession. I'm nowhere near 5 professional years experienced, but at home, with a standard stand, no pneumatic tools, etc, I can have both my front and rear tires off and back on in 20 minutes. Add another 20 so that I may change both tires, and hell we'll add 20 for cushion if I'm having an off day and in an hour I can do front and rear.

We get $13.99 off bike with tire purchase, $29.99 on bike with purchase. With out tire purchase, we're at $25.99 and $40.99, respectively. I usually quote most sportbikes at 45 minutes to an hour to do both ends, but we routinely get them done in 30 minutes or less. I have the special tools for the MV and also for the Ducatis. Not to mention that we have very competitive tire prices, and surly friendly service (me!).
