Re: RMNP full moon ride - Friday night, 7/31/15

So, the weather forecast for Friday in Estes Park seems to be going downhill fast. The latest from TWC and AccuWeather is calling for 40% to 60% chance for afternoon and evening thunderstorms. Meanwhile, Thursday and Saturday look pretty dry...WTF? A decision will have to be made by the end of day on Thursday as to whether we continue as planned, change it to the next day (Saturday the 1st), or cancel it altogether and try again at the end of August. FYI, moonrise for Saturday isn't until 9:05pm.

I'm open to your thoughts and ideas.

Edit: I just checked the NWS forecast, and they're only calling for a slight chance on Friday (10-20%), so who the hell knows!!!

As of today, TWC forecast is back down to 20%, so I think we should continue with the original plan, but with a possible earlier KSU time.

What do you think about leaving Lyons at 08:30p so we could catch the moon rise!? That would time better spent than waiting in Lyons until dark.

Personally, I'd like to be up high in the park when the moon is coming upon its perigee.

Re: RMNP full moon ride - Friday night, 7/31/15

I'm ok with leaving at 8:30. I wouldn't want to leave any earlier than that, however. I don't want to be mid-ride both before and after sunset. That can be a pain for those that run dark shields in the day and clears at night. I know seeing the moonrise from high in the hills can be rather spectacular sometimes, but that would require a much earlier start and basically be a day ride to get up there, and a night ride home. The point of this ride is to be a rare night ride, with a little extra light from the full moon. Maybe next month we can do a "sunset/moonrise" ride (BTW, that would be Saturday, Aug 29 if anyone wants to start a thread).

So with that, unless anyone has any objections, we will change the KSU time from 9:00pm to 8:30pm, out of the Lyons Shamrock. I don't think a short notice, 30 minute change will screw it up for too many folks. Not that it matters at this point, but I'll change the first post to reflect the new times.

I also just realized that tomorrow is officially a blue moon! Won't happen again until 2018.

If the weather holds at 20% chance of rain by tomorrow, then count me in. I haven't done any ride like this before, it's a sight to see I'm sure. Hope the weather holds up.

Looks like I'm out, actually. Just left on the bike a little bit ago and after my first stop the bike wouldn't start. After a push start I got it home and started checking things. Turns out the cables bringing power from the stator to the battery is burnt up at the connector. Not a today fix since I'm not even sure if you can buy that connector separately, or not.

Ok, looks like we're gonna give this a shot. Hopefully the clouds up there break up some by 9. I also saw on the news that the ISS will be visible to the west around 10:30pm. Hope we get a chance to see it! See you all at Lyons...don't forget, Kick Stands Up at 8:30pm.
