WSBK - New Rule *****Possible spoiler****

So what's everyone think about the new rule in World Superbike?? Apparently, if a guy wins Race 1 they punish good work by making him line up 9th on the grid for Race 2. In fact, the entire podium from Race 1 must line up in reverse on the grid. 1st = 9th, 2nd = 8th and 3rd = 7th. The reasoning behind it all is to make for more competitive racing and move slower riders up and make the faster riders have to work through the grid.

Two problems with this: 1. Qualifying is now meaningless. Why try and do your best? In order to secure a good starting position in order to fight for the win, just to be punished for it on Race 2(keep in mind this only effects positions 1-9, the rest 10 and below stay the same for race two). 2. The fastest guys must now have to contend with slower riders and starters in the mind pack, to fight to get to the front.

I think this is a dick move. It is still obvious that by the results of Race 2, that the cream will rise to the top. However, this kind of everyone gets a "gold star" treatment is even starting to creep into racing. Are we going to start handing out trophies for "coolest paint scheme" on a bike?? How about "most time spent running dead last." Better yet, just hand out boxes of tissue to everyone so we can all have a good cry once the race is over.

Couldn't believe what I was hearing during Race 1 when they mentioned the new rule for Race 2. I think it's a stupid idea and can't wait for it to show up in MotoGP next.

    Re: WSBK - New Rule

    Agreed

I also think it creates some added danger for the front pack in Race 2. If I am a 1st position guy in Race 2 I'm wondering if a win means the real fast guys got caught in a bad passing or traffic situation. I understand the theory but the execution is wrong as evidenced by the same riders being at the front in this past weekends races. (Sorry if that's a spoiler)

Does this year have an asterick in the record books for this nonsense?

Well it happened again this past weekend. I think this whole new rule is just bunk. The fast guys just have to work a little harder but they just end back up at the front. I agree with you, I think this rule creates some safety issues. Lots of fast guys getting caught up with slower but fast guys and then having to get anxious and make dive bomb passes. Look at what happened with Davies. Came in hot, and then just low-sided.

Yeah WSBK is pretty irrelevant at this point. It's the Kawi show for now and the new rule is just weird. EEEEhh MotoGP starts soon!

Which sucks, because I really enjoy WSBK, always have. Not sure if it really is a Kawi show, or more of a Johnny Rea show. The guy is a beast and just very smooth and fast. Everyone else seem to be riding on the ragged edge and he just rides his own race. Even Sykes on his Kawi struggles and can't match his pace. I've always thought WSBK is way more competitive than MotoGP(where the team with the biggest pockets wins) but lately, it has become similar in that certain riders dominate more than they used too. I will say, more bikes tend to run closer in WSBK than in MotoGP.

Wished the Velocity channel was a little easier to pin down when they show British SBK, I really liked watching their series. When I had DirectTV, there was a channel called MAV TV, and they played the Australian Superbike series and man that was a good time.

But I'm with you, MotoGP is right around the corner and soon the season will be in full swing.

    Re: WSBK - New Rule

I tend to agree with you on most things and this is no different. WSBK of past years was my favorite racing. They were racing close and a lot of teams were competitive. Now it just seems to bore me every time I watch it. If Nicky would get a competitive bike that would help. Maybe if Davies would get on a terror and give Rea some of the business end of that Duck it would help. For now I'm afraid the more exciting series is MotoGP which I have no problem with.
