Ice Challenger Arrives at South Pole

This morning the Ice Challenger arrived. It’s six wheeled van. They set a new speed record from the coast to the pole.

so what kind of special stuff do they need to get the vehicles started in the morning? We have a hard time here starting at -14 if you park outside overnight.

I think they leave the motor running. Right now that’s what they are doing.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to go out and start it every hour or so?

I rarely think of motorcycles without a little yearning. They are about moving, and humans, I think, yearn to move – it’s in our cells, in our desires. We quiet our babies with cyclic movement, and we quiet ourselves by going.

Not really, it's a diesel. It'll idle for a month on a tank of gas. It's quite common in cold environments (northern territory, Siberia, etc) to leave it running and keep all of the fluids warm (including the fuel, which can gel up at really cold temps).

In the oil towns of Siberia some of the "I" beams in buildings are insulated/heated to keep the cold from turning them into brittle POSs and "exploding". Diesel trucks will run all winter.
In a hot truck oil can turn into molasses in 1/2 an hour.

I'm thinking the S. Pole is colder than that.
You shut it off and your done.

It'd be a bitch if you had a smoker with you and they wanted to crack the window to have a puff - Brrrrrrrrrrrr.....

And what the hell do you talk about for that many hours? I bet they had Serius satellite radio. You'd go nuts if you didn't.

Not to mention the huge amounts of additives to the diesel fuel they use to keep the fuel from turning to gel. Even here if you drive a diesel and its cold (last week) I recommend additives.....and of course and nice block heater plugged in if the vehicle is turned off!

I know that used a GPS setup to get them here, so satellite radio would not bee too far fetched.

It took the 69 hours and 30mins from Patriot Hills on the coast to the South Pole Station about 750 miles of nothing but ice snow and crevasses. They said they got it stuck a few times.
