    Doing my own fork seals??

I have an 02 GSXR 1000 (inverted forks) and need to replace my fork seals. I have never done it before, but I do have the manual. So is it pretty hard to do, or do I need any special tools? I just want to know what I am getting into, before I take the forks apart and end up getting stuck. Any tips/advice would be great. Or if anybody wouldn't mind giving me a hand up in Fort Collins, that would even be better.

This is not hard work at all. If you are at all mechanically inclined and follow the directions in the manual exactly then you will have no trouble completeing the job. Get all of your parts in order first including new fork oil. If you are so inclined this is a great time to install things like gold valves from race tech or install other internal modifications.

Some forks (I don't know about the USD forks) need a special tool to loosen the bolt at the bottom. You can get one from the dealer, but most dealers just use an impact wrench to get them off. The problem is how to hold the insides when you spin the bolt. Also, it helps to have a fork seal driver (I made mine out of a broken fork tube for the same bike by cutting it off and smoothing the edge). It is a fairly easy proceedure otherwise.

I have done mine once, but TK did them the second time. With the forks off the bike, it is pretty inexpensive to have someone else do.

TK will get them done quickly and at a reasonable price. Give them a call at 720-904-9040. They recently became and Ohlins dealer, so have extensive training in the matter.

Thanks guys. I know I could take them some where, but I really want to learn how to do this myself. I am going to try it, and if I get stuck and can't finish it or something, then I will just bring in the forks and have them finish up. I just really want to know if I need some special tools besides the seal driver.

It definitely helps to have a spring compressor as well as something to use to bleed the cartridge during reassembly. Also, as stated before, it's nice to have an impact for disassembly. I haven't been on here much lately, but PM me if you'd like to borrow some tools. I'd like to help out, but right now my garage is a total mess, and I'm in the middle of moving.

I'm also going to be learning this for the first time on a CBR 900RR. I live in Loveland, so if you want to learn together, send me a PM.

    Khalid, you need
    Fork seal driver
Spring Compressor (you need to remove the spring from the cartridge to set oil level)
Some manner of measuring oil level
The long allen and probably an impact to remove the holding screw on the bottom

Make sure you: tape over holes before running seals over them (sharp edges will cut)
Clean everything with a fairly lint free cloth
Set your top clickers into the seat before taking apart.

Lot of other details but this gets you started.
