That is simply amazing.Bet it was cool as hell bein that close.
Wouldn't the ear drums explode from being so close to such a thing? That cloud like shape didn't look to convicing....

I was stationed on the Kennedy (CV67) for 4 years. That was a VERY real video of an F-14 breaking the Sound Barrier.
It doesn't hurt your ear drums too much but it sure does shake the living shit out of your body and everything around you.
It's quite an exciting thing to see, especially in person 100 yards off the side of the ship!

When I was at vandenburg AFB south of San Luis Obispo, they held an air show there. They had the navy F-16 break the sound barrier or close to, about that far away and very close to the ground. Had the same vaporish loooking thing forming at the tip and started to move back towrads the tail but he backed off and pulled STRAIGHT up. There's NOTHING as awesome as these airshows where the fighters to climb miles up into the air, verticle and then all you see is this tiny red dot.
but it's no big deal because I do that all the time on my bike, but the difference is, I push right past that barrier

but how and why water vapor?
and if you really want to get into the how and why...."The change in pressure as the plane outruns all of the pressure and sound waves in front of it is heard on the ground as an explosion or sonic boom. The pressure change condenses the water in the air as the jet passes these waves. Altitude, wind speed, humidity, the shape and trajectory of the plane -- all of these affect the breaking of this barrier. The slightest drag or atmospheric pull on the plane shatters the vapor oval like fireworks as the plane passes through"

That was a nice video clip.
They say fly'n a fighter jet takes the same "focus" as fly'n a sport bike! Some days I can only fly a Cessna 152.

Here I was going to post to the thread and then noticed how old this was and that I already had...

Having broke the sound barrier in an F-15, I can honestly say that seeing it is a million times cooler than doing it.
