    chain help needed

Need to replace my chain and spockets, not sure how to get the chain off. it's not like the chains i've done before and the new one is the same way it doesn't have the master link that just slid on.

Guess i'm looking for some one to show me how to get the old one off and the new one on.

Your chain has a rivet link. You will need a chain breaker to drive the rivets out unless you have something else to cut it off. To put the new chain on you will need a chain press.

another option is you can go buy one of the clip master links for your chain for about 5 bucks and then take a grinder to one of the rivets on your old chain and grind it flush to the side and then take a punch and whack it out. then on with the new one.

    thats the redneck way anyway.

the rivet will be much more secure than the clip. i would never use a clip on anything except a dirt bike.

ive used clips many times and never had problems. ive even used them at track days and friday night drags. I actually havent ever heard of any problems with them from anyone i know. im sure the rivets are more secure but so far my experiences with clips show them to be very withstanding. (as long as the clip is put in the right direction)

    Re: chain help needed

If his new chain came with a rivet link he may as well just use it. If he doesnt have the proper tools, there are a number of people on this forum that will help him. There was just another post this past week that someone was asking for help and they got it.

JimWallace thats great that you drag race and do track days and you have never had the clip break or come off. I witnessed a clip fail and the chain came apart on an R1. The chain when through the cases. The additional peace of mind using the rivet link is well worth. I would never use a clip.

original chains do not usually have a master link. just cut it off. grind off the rivits.
