Discussion: Movie Topic #2: Best Screen Adaptation

    Debate Topic #2:
What is the greatest book-to-movie adaptation in your opinion?

    Automatically nullified arguments (as usual):
Anything written by, or attributable to Shakespeare.
    It's still just too easy.

    Founding argument to contest:

    Lord of the Rings Trilogy
While not 100% accurate to the books - it is epic is scope and depth. Sure they paint Frodo as the hero when we all know it was really Samwise that deserves the credit for saving Middle Earth when you boil it down but you can't escape the sheer beauty and brutality of the trilogy as put to film.

    What say you?

To quote the Joker: "And... here... we... GO!"
...Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that it's my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V.

Without getting into detail, absolutely the LotR series, EPIC. And I'm a Tolkein snob and went in thinking "who is this Peter Jackson guy"? How will he RUIN my childhood lifelong beloved favorite fantasy series of all time? THEN I WAS FLOORED.

Some others I've read that were turned into excellent films: The Shining, Clockwork Orange, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Outsiders, FastTimesAtRidgemontHigh (yes I actually read the Cameron Crowe book, and the movie was damn close, lol)

Unfortunately outside scifi/fantasy, I'm not very well read, just no time. But 2001:Space Odyssey movie was pretty damn close to the book. 2010:Odyssey Two was very close as well. EXCEPT I noticed they left out the part about the Chinese secret (manned) mission to claim/colonize the Europa moon, before the Russians got there. Instead they showed the Russian probe going down to investigate.

Well the obvious ones will be:

    Hunger Games
Harry Potter (only ones I read of the three)
    Twilight Series

My choices would be (which I actualy read):

    The Godfather
The Silence of the Lambs (Hannibal may be one too, but up for debate)
    The Shining
    The Green Mile
    Scarface
    Shawshank Redemption
    Goodfellas
    Casino
    Misery
    The Firm

Others I have not read, but have heard good things about:
    Fight Club
    A Clockwork Orange
    The Outsiders
    To Kill A Mockingbird

Damn Bulldog, that's a nice list. Great movies! (added a few of yours to my list that I've actually read, heh.) Guess I forgot about some of those classics especially, became great movies.

I am waiting for the comments on people that are shocked I read

I have read so many books I can't even come close to thinking how many. Think I have read almost every Dean Koonts book, many James Patterson, John Grisham, Steven King, Michael Crichton, and so many others. I've read a lot of biographies too from MMA fighters to Rap stars to war heroes. Think I was averaging 1 book per week for about five years.

Of course Lord Of the Ring and Hobbit, but that was mentioned first so left it off my list.

I hope they serve beer in hell

I love the book, the movie needed to be longer but they got some good stuff in there.

You know there is a sequel called "Assholes Finish First". I have it if you ever want to borrow it.

Lots of possibilities here, but the 1992 remake of Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men" with John Malkovich and Gary Sinise came to mind pretty quickly.

"A strict observance of the written laws is doubtless one of the high duties of a good citizen, but it is not the highest. The laws of necessity, of self- preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property, and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means."

Outstanding book and they did do a great job with the movie.
