Whew just reached Boulder.
At 450 miles in the day (not counting the ride to BV yesterday night), I think this is my current limit for long day-rides (at least without prior prep/practice).
Loved meeting everyone, and hopping to do many more rides!
It was a good run. Meet new people and use the Harley wave. Good times.
What a great day for this year's ride! Weather was perfect, rode conditions were pristine and save for a few areas, traffic was light this year.
Had a great time up until a CSP trooper in an unmarked black charger decided to harass our group towards the end of the day. More on that later.
Independence Pass:
One of the two lovely ladies on this ride:
Lunch at Crawford (halfway point).
Lookout point in the Black Canyon
Then we descended Monarch Pass and ran into the Colorado State Patrol. The short version is we passed an unmarked CSP Dodger traveling in the opposite direction. He turns around and then does a flyby of our group with the lights/sirens blaring, going 90+ MPH down the mountain. Two miles down the road he's sitting at the old Monarch Lodge and motions us to pull over. He was pissed.
He stopped us for speeding, yet did not give any of us a speeding ticket... After detaining us for nearly an hour, the trooper gave us a careless driving ticket with a mandatory court appearance in Salida. Realizing this was a bullshit charge, I objected and asked what his reasoning for the careless driving ticket was.
He initially told me to take it up with the DA but when I pressed for an answer and added that I wanted to speak with his supervisor, he responded that we were riding as a "pack" in the rain, speeding and "hugging the corners". Not leaving the lane mind you but "hugging" the corners, which my video clearly shows is not true but even it was, it's perfectly legal... you get to use your entire lane!
It's bullshit, not raining and the roads were completely dry. Should be interesting because as luck with have it, I have the whole thing on video. I'm strongly considering filing a formal complaint of harassment. I mean seriously... someone was speeding but because the trooper doesn't know which bike it was, the entire group gets a careless driving ticket... really??
Behold! The rain and wet roads! (Taken a few minutes after he pulled us over).
