Honda probably thought about it in the same way that Yamaha handled early contracts with Quartararo/Viņales given they know Ducati is on the prowl for another top rider that can bring them a championship given that Petrucci has been a flop and Dovi isn't getting any younger. HRC knows that MM is the only option at them remaining competitive so they locked him down.
